Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Finally ready to order tail kit

Author: Cameron Kurth <cameronkurth@...> Time: Sat Oct 5, 2002 5:25 am PDT Link

The bathroom is almost done (that was the deal, finish
the bathroom and I get to make a lot of noise in the
basement)

I believe the two options that I need to deside on are
the trim controls and the fiberglass rudder bottom?
Am I missing something here? By the way does anyone
have a picture of the two rudder bottoms? The way I
understand it, one is smooth while the other has a
provision for a light.

Thanks for all the info.

Cam

Cameron,
I should have a few pictures of the lower rudder cap on my site within the next few days. http://home1.gte.net/res07bh6/empennage2.htm James Varney made a neat little mounting bracket for the rudder light. He sent me a template and I made an AutoCAD drawing that can be printed and traced. The file can be found in the RV7 group under files/strobe/StrobeMount.dwg.

Cam,

You really don't have to make up your mind about the electric vs manual trim just yet. You can build the entire HS without anything specific to the trim type. The trim tab has a small control horn with two holes, one for manual and one for electric. You just trim away the portion of the horn you won't be needing once you decide. I believe the tail kit includes everything you need for manual, if you decided on electric later, just buy the electric kit and proceed.

As far as rudder bottoms, the non lighted rudder bottom just has a uniform taper at the trailing edge. The lighted bottom has a round flat pad (about 1 1/2" round) on the trailing edge for the strobe/pos. light. The light pad tapers forward into the sides of the fairing.

Are you going to equip your plane for lights? If so, you'll need
the rudder bottom that can handle the rear facing position light.
(unless you're planning on putting 2-way position lights out on the
wing tips instead of under the plexi in the wing tip leading edge.)

There's a close up of the wing lights and the rudder bottom in the
photos section in the 9A folder.

Cam: Right now, the only decision you need to make to order the kit is
the tail position light decision. They need to know which type of lower
rudder fairing to include in your kit prior to shipping. The elevator
trim decision can be made anytime---even after the elevator and H.S. is
finished. The lower rudder fairing comes in two types: plain or
sculpted, wherein the trailing edge at the bottom of the rudder has a
molded-in fairing for an aft-facing position light or position/strobe
combination, such as the ones offered by Whelen or AeroFlash. Since the
wingtips are already pre-molded now (notched and faired) to accept only
the embedded red/green position lights and a side/forward facing strobe,
the combination position/strobe/aft-facing white position light unit
will not work on the RV-9A, and to be legal, you must install
(somewhere) an aft-facing white position light. The lower rudder
fairing sculpted for the light fills this requirement nicely, and gives
a more up-market "finished" look to the airplane.
The important thing, however, is that you order the kit, and start the
journey. Better to finish the basement (into a workshop) and make noise
in the bathroom!
Regards, John Williams
