Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Side Step hole size in baggage rib

I am at the point where I need to drill the hole in the baggage ribs
for the 1 1/2" tubs that is on the step itself. The Plans call for
this hole to 1 1/2" while the instructions call for a 1 5/8" hole.
Since this rib is roughly 75 degrees compared to the tube on the
step, I thought the hole size of 1 5/8" would be more appropiate.
Has anyone noticed this before, it so, what did you do. I don't
think either size would make a great deal of difference, but I wanted
to be sure.

Drill either size hole and enlarge it to fit as necessary.

You'll find the weld radius between the mounting flange and the step tube will require "some fitting" to get it to lay flat, even after you shape the mounting flange to fit the side of the plane.

I have nothing in front of me so am working from memory. I remember the tube
as being at 90deg to the baggage ribs (square to the center line) The two
tubes are co-axial. My hole is the same size as the tube plus enough to let
it slide through. The hole in the side of the aircraft is the projection of
the tube onto it. I used a tank cutter at 90 deg to the center line. Hope
that helps. Steve.

PS If the tube is not at 90 deg to the center line the step wont be either
which would seem odd to me.
PPS you then hit the plate on the tube hard til it matches the skin.

I remember having to enlarge the skin hole much larger than the tube to
accommodate the weld to get it to fit flush. .
