I've searched the messages for discussion on the 0235 Lyc powered -9
without success. Anybody here with a "less is more" opinion on this
option. Consider this, 108 HP, light weight electrical system, one
com, one nav, portable GPS and com backup, partially polished to save
paint weight etc.

Gerald - your approach resonates with me. I am in the UK where a US gal of
gas costs around $6. Since diesel is about 1/5th of that, the Wilksch diesel
WAM120 is very attractive to me though I worry that it is not proceeding
fast enough for me to commit to it. It is rated at 120HP. My back up plan,
though not final is to look at installing an O235 which by the way is
normally 118HP. If I go this route I would almost certainly put a constant
speed prop on. I am not sure if you can drive the prop with oil on an O235
but MT make an electric one if not. Some research needed here.
Apart from the fuel saving I am motivated by the fact that I have a short
runway at my home. A true static 118HP will get me out OK but I want minimum
weight for landing since that is related to stopping distance and the C/S
prop would help.
I am a VFR pilot and in the past have found that one com and a good GPS gets
me around Europe just fine. Just make sure they are installed properly so
they don't go down in flight. My back up is a map and eyeball.
Finally, I asked Gus about the O235 the other day. He indicated that
although the original demo aircraft had this engine very few -9 builders
were going this route. Off the cuff he thought 3 to 5. I put that down to
the fact that in the USA you have effectively free fuel. [ And don't care
for the planet. Ooops! :-) ]
Having said all that I am not sure what the weight difference in the O320
and O235 is. More research needed. If it is not significant the answer is
O320 and pull the power back!
Steve.

Gerry: If my memory serves me correctly, the O-235 carbureted version
is rated at (and maybe even actually puts out) 118 hp. You can bump
this up a bit with fuel injection and a good electronic ignition, as
well as save a little fuel in the process. A clear case of "more is
less". Regards, John Williams

Dear Steve Sampson
I was enjoying reading about your experiences flying in Europe until your comment about the relationship of American fuel prices and our alleged lack of loving care for the planet. How misinformed you are to think that we are not ecologically sensitive. (Compare American auto emission standards to yours) How uninformed you are to think that high prices for fuel (spelled TAXATION) can quell a typical American's usage. If this were to be the case, we would just go out, work smarter and harder, and earn more money to feed our flying habit!

I looked pretty hard at a Lyc 0235 before ordering my kit.
Found that while initial acquisition costs for a used engine were
lower, overhaul costs and parts were equivalent to the 0320. Other
than saving a couple grand on a core, I would end up spending nearly
as much on an 0235 as an 0320, assuming I would not fly what I
bought but install a 0 SMOH engine.

Hi Gerry,
I believe the O235 sports 118 HP. If you go to the Van's Aircraft web site they did a side by side comparison with there first RV9A prototype and a Cessna 152 using that engine. Obviously the 9 blew away the Cessna.
