Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Fuel leaks

I noticed fuel stains under one of my wing root fairings. I removed the fairing and found that fuel was seeping out around the screws that hold the cover plate, and the screws holding the fuel quantity sending unit, The screws were not loose. I made washers from some soft copper, and this solved the problem. After talking to an RV-6 and an RV-8 builder I found they have the same problem. I found a source for pressure sealing washers that will solve this problem, They are expensive. ($8.00 for a pack of 10) I am at home so I don't have the info on them here, but I have it at the hanger, If any one wants the info I will post it on this site.

Funny...I noticed fuel stains under my right wing root fairing last
week. When I pulled the fairing, expecting to find exactly what Sam
describes, the screws that I'd put in the inspection plate 8 years
ago were perfectly dry. I cleaned them all with MEK and dipped them
in ProSeal before I drove them home.

What I DID find was that the flarenut on the fuel line (in this case
in front of the T-405 attach fitting, because the right tank has a
flop tube. Why a flop tube in a carbureted airplane?...in
retrospect, I have NO idea why....) was loose. Real loose. Spin it
easily with your fingers loose. Why, after several years, did it get
loose? No idea there either, but few moments with a tubing wrench
fixed it.

Just one more thing to keep an eye on.
