Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Builders Insurance

Author: "brywd" <brywd@...> Time: Tue Oct 22, 2002 5:07 pm PDT Link

Hi all,

Lately the thought of builders insurance is becoming more intriguing
to me. Have any of you purchased or shopped prices on this insurance?
Somewhere in the project the risk of loss is too great, not just in
time and money but the dream. Combined, these add up to premiums in
my future. I called Avemco for a quote and they sent a form for me to
submit asking hours on the airframe, etc. I think they missed the
concept of my request. Apparently the E.A.A. has a deal set up with a
carrier, does anybody know who it is?

Thanks,
Bryan Wood

Bryan,

To my knowledge they still do. This was from EAA news letter ( you can sign up on their web site)

Avemco Resumes Hull Coverage For Entire RV Series
Avemco Insurance Company announced on May 23 that it has resumed writing new hull coverage policies for the entire Van's RV series
of aircraft. In mid-March, Avemco had placed a moratorium on issuing new hull policies for many homebuilt models, including the RV
series. Prior to the Sun 'n Fun EAA Fly-In, Avemco had lifted the hull coverage moratorium on all of the RV models except the RV-3,
3B, 8 and 8A models. No existing policies were cancelled by the moratorium and third-party liability coverage has continued to be
available, according to the company. EAA is continuing to work with Avemco to evaluate the underwriting of new hull policies for
other popular homebuilt models. If you are experiencing problems obtaining insurance coverage for your aircraft, contact EAA at
888-EAA-INFO (322-4636) for assistance.

A friend of mine uses "Nations Air" and pays $350 per year on $50K worth of insurance on his RV-6A which doesn't sound like a bad deal...I'm planning on getting some once the fuselage kit arrives as I will then have a more sizable investment in the project.

Hi Bryan,

When I sold a Cessna 172, (insured by Avemco because of the EAA discount), so I could by a new engine for my 9A. I had just paid my annual premium. The agent ask if I would like to convert those funds to construction insurance. I chose at that time not to go with it and ask for a refund. Avemco did issue a refund after ripping me for $95.00 in "early cancellation and processing fee's", so I will be looking elsewhere for coverage. To answer your origanal question, Yes... At this stage you need to get coverage.

Thanks for your inputs on the insurance. It turns out that Doug
Reeves is way ahead of us on this one. Go to Dougs site and there is
a link on the top right for Nation Air.

I know that Sam has well over 12,000 hours! I wonder how much it would be for a 300 hour pilot?
