Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Fuel Tank Test

Author: "jerrynvanatta" <jnv@...> Time: Wed Oct 23, 2002 10:45 am PDT Link

I am ready to test my 9A fuel tanks for leaks and can't find the
information on how to do it. I know there is a water tube that is
used somehow. I need information on how to make it and do the test.
Please direct me to that info.

Thanks,

Jerry

Jerry,
I have been testing fuel tanks for many years by putting one ballon inside of another and putting them over any opening in the tanks, I then seal the other openings and apply pressure to blow up the ballons. I then let it sit and if the ballons don't go down in a day or two, I have no leaks. If the ballons deflate, I blow them back up and use dishwashing detergent and water to find out where it is leaking. Works for me, and only costs the price of a couple of kids ballons. I have known other people to use surgical cloves in place of the ballons. The reason for using the ballons is to keep from putting to much pressure in the tanks.

I don't know if it was Sam means to do or not, but to prevent any
confusion I will add...

When using a balloon (or a latex glove like I use), do not use enough
air pressure to actually inflate the ballon. This is to much
pressure. Use just enough to fill the limp ballon and make it
stiff. It takes a lot more pressure to actually start to expand the
balloon and this is way to much for an RV tank. If the the ballon
holds it's shape for a couple of hours you are leak free. Testing
with more pressure than this is not required.

To you that responded to my tank test, thanks. What a great group we have

I used the surgical glove method and it worked just fine.
The only leak detected was around the tank cap. Check that first if it leaks
down.
