Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Riviting HS skins

Author: Cameron Kurth <cameronkurth@...> Time: Sun Oct 27, 2002 8:59 pm PST Link

After three days and 16 hours of work I'm ready to
prime and start riveting the HS. For the most part
everything has gone very well, this kit is
unbelievable. Now I've read the plans many times and
most web sites I could find, but starting to rivet the
skins is a bit intimidating. Is there any web sites
out there that have a good disciption of how to start
the riveting of the skins. While the kit is great I
find myself thinking they left something off the
instructions. I'm expecting to get the wing kit and
the instructions saying "build the wing".

Thanks
Cameron

Cameron,

Actually it says "build the wing twice" :>) I found building the wing more straight forward than the tail section. I think by
the time you get to the wings your mind is "tuned" in to the drawings and your skills are already honed. Piece of cake really.... As
far as riveting, practice on scrap pieces with different types. I think most guys here would agree the wing section of the kit is
pretty well documented.

Twice??? Oh no!! My girlfriend already thinks I'm
nuts because after she thought I built the HS I then
took it apart.

As far as practicing the riveting, been doing that a
bit. Anyone know how many extra rivets there are in
the kit? I've used up quite a few practicing
different types of riveting. Even got my girlfriend
in on the act. She drove and held the bucking bar.

Thanks for all the help.

There's plenty of rivets. My best advice is "just do it".
You'll have your share of smilies and perhaps an oh-shit or two, but you'llget the hang of it pretty quickly. You had better,,, there's about 15,000more to come!
