Hi All,
I am brand new to the list and brand new to flying (just a 30 hour
student pilot). Should have started 30 years ago. Despite the quote
I got from an Avemco agent at the AOPA Expo last week ($4000/yr) I
still want to build an RV. The problem is my size. I am 6'6" tall
and have to squeeze a bit to get into the -9. I know I can mess with
the cushion thickness and move the rudders back to the 51" position
but have never sat in a -9 with this configuration. Of course an -8
would fit better but I feel with the low time I have the flying
qualities of the -9 would be better for me. Anyone out there have
the same problem as I do? Anybody my size or larger building a -9?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am chomping at the bit to
order an empennage kit and get started on the workshop.
Thank in advance,
Dan Watters

I seem to remember a 6'5" builder either on this group or maybe
the Vans Aircraft WWW world wide wing website. I am pretty sure he
was building or had built a 9 or 9A. Regarding insurance, you might
find that it would be cheaper if you build and fly the trigear 9A
rather than the tailwheel 9. That was one of the deciding factors in
my selection of the 9A. Also the insurance for tailwheels is higher
for a reason. You will get all kinds of advice regarding the
attributes of tri-gear vs. tailwheel. For a low time pilot, why not
go with better control, when landing and on the ground. my 2 cents
worth. Je N489JE 9A wings.

-You can make it fit...it won't be roomy, but it flies so well you
won't care. The 9 is NOT a lesser airplane than the
6/7/8...different yes, but in its way, exceptional. You gain several
miles an hour on the low end, stay even (or even gain slightly) on
the high end (given the same power) get stall characteristics that
have to make you laugh and still carry a large load. I love the
thing.
Insurance should not cost anywhere near 4K. For million liability
and 45K hull, I pay about 1500/yr and that's with three pilots, one
pretty low time, flying off a grass strip in a taildragger. I'm
about to drop the hull, which is the great majority of the cost.
I've found (in real life) that if you break your homebuilt, you can
either fix it or you don't care anymore...and even a major airframe
repair is likely to cost less than a few years of hull insurance.
You can start building for $2500...that's an emp kit and basic
tools. I built my complete airplane in a one car garage, and could
have done it in even less if I'd had to. Just build the thing...most
of the things you perceive as problems or obstacles now will take
care of themselves when you get there.

Hey Dan,
I'm 6' 3" and had my first chance to sit in the 9A at the AOPA conference last weekend in Palm Springs. Even without having the pedals adjusted for me I did not feel cramped. My head cleared the canopy by at least 3-4 inches and it seemed like the seat cushions had about 3" of padding aprox. I was more worried about my knees hitting under the panel but that was no problem either.

Thanks for the input on my post. Actually I was being lazy when I
typed "-9". I am thinking of the -9A. My takeoffs and landings are
scary enough in the C-172. I can't imagine what damage I could do
with a tail dragger. Really do want to build the -9A but if I have
to go with the -8A for the room that is what I will do.
Thanks again,
Dan

Hi Dan,
I know a guy in the 6'4" to 6'6" who built a 6a. I am
6'0" and when I sat in the cockpit My feet did not
reach the rudder pedals.
Good luck

Hey Dan,
Sounds like what you need is an 8A fuselage with a 9A wing!

Hi Dan,
I'm about 90% sure that there is a father/son team in Bakersfield, CA
that are building a 9A. If this is the team I'm thinking of the dad
was 6'6" and stout by his own admission. I would go to the E.A.A.
website and the chapter locator to find the Bakersfield Chapter and
see if they can put you in touch with these gents.
Best of luck in your decision,

Hey, Dan: Pssssst. Size doesn't matter, or at least that's what they
say. Flew the RV-9A factory demo with Tom Greene, who is a very tall,
lanky individual---around 6'5" if I remember correctly. He fit in it
nicely, with plenty of leg room, and his knees weren't tucked up under
his chin. Seemed plenty big to me, even for a long, tall guy. You'll
find a way, I'm sure. Regards, J. Williams

I called Van's this morning all ready to order my empennage kit for
the 9A. After talking with them I am back to square one due to my
height. I brought this up on the list before and I apologize to
those who previously read my babble. Essentially it has come down to
RV-9A or RV-8A. I am 6'6" tall and I got to sit in the 9A at both
Copperstate and AOPA. Problem is I never took the time to try to
adjust things for myself and make myself fit. As you all probably
know there is usually a line of people waiting to get into Van's
planes at the shows. Adding to the height problem is the fact that I
am still a student pilot and feel the 9A is better suited to my skill
level (or lack thereof). I do feel that with proper training I could
fly any of Van's planes. So the question I have to pose is: Is
there anyone in the souther Arizona area with a 8 or 9 (realizing
there aren't many 9's out there) that I could sit in and check the
fit. I will be attending the Sportair workshop in Corona, CA Jan.
17th so if anyone in the southern CA. area is available I would
appreciate that also. Sorry to continue the discussion on this but I
would hate to build a 9A and then wonder what the heck I was thinking
after my first cross country.
Thanks in advance,

Dan, I know there is a 9 being built in Yuma, I think it is near completion
if not already complete. I met the builder and a couple of his friends at
AOPA. Sorry I don't remember his name, but if you contact the EAA chapter
you could probably get a name.

My understanding is that both the 7 and 9 fuselage are virtually
identical as far as interior passenger dimensions go (at least the
specs page on Vans web site has the same dimensions for both).
It might be easier for you to find a 7 builder who is far enough
along that you can try it on for size and even sit there for an hour
or two to see how you feel. (could get stuffy with the canopy closed
though)
