Sure would be nice if they turned that darned spar around wouldn't
it? I got all excited to see that leading edge rolled all nice and
neat, until I realized that I needed smaller hands and none of my
bucking bars is "just right".
Before I give up and follow the plans, has anyone had any luck
getting a gun in there and back riveting those puppies?
Just the left elevator and farings to go. Big container ship backup
out here due to the dock workers stike a few weeks ago. Some QB
shipments have made a round trip. Good luck to everyone (including
me) who have November/December deliveries. We may get our Christmas
present before the dockworkers go out again.

Mike,
It can be tough but not impossible to back rivet the one side of the spar. I did it using a long 3/8 in thick flat bar under the
spar and "tied" the skin back to gain access. Took less than 10 minutes after the clamping was done. Some pictures of technique at

Hi Mike,
There has been a couple of special bucking bars made with some success. My opinion is to use the blind rivets. It's the bottom, and by the time you prep, prime, and paint, you won't really notice them. I did use flush rivets where my Main Squeeze would reach.
Good Luck

Hi Mike,
Go to Doug Reeve's web site and look in the builder's profiles
archive section. The address is
http://www.metronet.com/~dreeves/rvbp/archive2001.htm. Scroll
down to profile #3 and you'll see a picture of me back-riveting the
top skins of my right elevator. The silver things holding open the
skin are foam blocks I found in a craft store and covered with
duct tape to make them a little stronger. On top of the silver
blocks are large sponges. The long rivet set is the one that
comes with the Avery C-Frame. All this took place in my garage
in Irvine, a few miles up the freeway from you in Dana Point!

Mike,
If you're referring to the top rivets, they can be totally flush riveted. You clamp the elevator vertically to your bench. The plans calls for a couple of big sponges to hold the elevator apart, but I had good results using a Styrofoam lined 1 x 2 with a tie down strap hooked to a cross board above my bench. That way I could do it by myself, and easily adjust the strap. Avery makes an angled bucking bar that fits right in there. I can get you the part no# if you need it.

Thanks Mark, I tried the URL but it seems to have died. The Avery
set is a great idea and I'll give that a try this weekend. I thought
I could hold the opposite skin flat to the bench with a piece of
plywood weighted with a few jugs water and open the top skin with
some large blocks of closed cell foam I've scrounged from work. Or I
may call on the little wife to hold it open, either way once I'm on
the rivets it won't take long.
How far along is your 9? Not many in Orange County, by my count.
Several 7's.

After I figured out how to rivet those elevator skin to spar rivets
alone, I posted a photo in the "construction photos" folder of the
photos section for all to see. (on the rv9a group web site)
Duct tape was the key.
