Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: NSI engine option

Author: "Don and Shirley" <cherokeepilots@...> Time: Wed Aug 6, 2003 6:45 am PDT Link

Attending Airventure sure helped me answer a lot of questions about
how I'm going to equip the Nine I'm building. I came in pretty much
convinced that I'd put a Lycoming (or clone) in it but I wanted to see
a Mazda 13B installation and ask questions. I wasn't ready for NSI's
"Plug and Play" Aero Subaru Engine...it has me thinking that maybe
there is an alternative to a Lycoming. I spoke at some length with
Lance about the system and its more than just a firewall forward
package, it includes the panel wiring and potentially a lot of the
avionics (they sell Apollo/UPS).

I could wax on about what I heard but the bottom line is the only
weakness I could find is in the "Transmission" which I would have
called a PSRU but apparently is a bit more. Lance indicated there is
a redesigned unit almost ready for sale (I'm not holding my breath but
he did seem honest and sincere). Apparently the Glastar has been
using this engine for a while. Does anyone have first hand
information on the company and/or the product?

Thanks,

Don,

I have the Eggenfellner Subaru package in my 9A and really do like
it. It comes complete from the firewall to the prop flange and can be
run as it comes with gas, oil, water, and batterys added. There is a
very through installation manual written by another customer (Gary
Newstead) that takes a lot of the wiring mystery out of it. Others
are working on a more conventional wiring schematic for the
installation.

Good customer support and a great bunch of customers that support
each other on the yahoo group.

Just another way to go if you are ready to skip the lycasaur on your
9.

Larry,

Thanks for the feedback on the Eggenfeller engine. I investigated it
2 years ago and decided to pass on it. My interest isn't in just any
Subaru modification. I'm interested in gathering substantive in field
experiences with the NSI.

Well that's likely to get you a blast of replies from all of us
happy Eggenfellner customers flying every day across this
country. It's smooth, quiet, trustworthy, economical, and a
very reasonable choice for an RV-9A. Having just flew 18 hours
to Oshkosh and back in severe weather conditions, I averaged
142KTAS (75%) and never once needed to think about engine problems.
Performance is exactly what I expected, quality is outstanding.

If you checked into this motor two years ago, perhaps it's time
to have a fresh look. I won't say anything about NSI since
you are gathering your own substantive in field experiences.
Good luck with your decision.

I don't have any specific information on the NSI package, but if you
haven't already done so, take a look at
www.subaruaircraft.com

There are a good number of users of this engine package and there are
basically nothing but happy users. It really is a plug and play setup.

I have one on order.

Up front, sorry Don I don't have any direct actual expierence with NSI... That being said, I would carefully research the past history of NSI and see if you can be convinced that they have changed their practices. There are a bunch of Kitfox builders that got burned by NSI multiple times over the years. Lots of questionable business going on at the time. This has been a few years ago. They have always had a great looking setup and a good story, but delivery seems to have lacked at times.

I only know of 1 RV personally flying with a NSI. That's Del Clifton up in Washington state. He has one in an RV6. It has taken him 3 years to get all the bugs worked out and get it flying smoothly.

I concur with the comment about the EGG sub group. There's another
group, the E-SubieForum which is NSI oriented, and does of lot of
EGG bashing, and very little useful info or exchange of ideas. If
they took a look at the decency and useful exchange of ideas and
tried to emulate those folks in the EGG group, it might have
possibilites as a good subaru site>

Hi Larry,
I had the pleasure of seeing Gary's Subaru 9A at Osh, and I will have to say
that is one of the best alternative engine installations I've ever seen. I
am sorry to say that I only got to speak to him once. He was one busy guy
all week.

Don,
A friend of mine got burned by NSI on a Subaru package he bought for a
Murphy Renegade Spirit. He's the one I mentioned at our Osh gathering that
couldn't keep the oil cool, and had a forced dead stick landing. It still
sits in the back of the hanger to this day.

Phil,

I am glad that Gary was at the other end of the display. His
installation definitely was attractive. We had the full spectrum
there from show planes to country work horses. The nice thing was
that ALL of them worked well for their owners. (I still wonder how
Robert Pasley got that much speed out of his 7.) I guess I had the
only "Teflon coated intake" there.

I had the pleasure of meeting so many folks at the booth that they
all run together for me but that is part of the fun of being at one
of those shows. There were names that I recognised from the list and
a bunch that said that they were "lurkers" still.

I can not tell you hhow much I enjoy being part of this group as we
work through the problems and joys of this endevor.

I think Roberts extra speed results from his aircraft being the
only one there without a nose wheel. That slick paint job probably
helped a bit. If nothing else, it made it look fast ;^)

Larry,
Sorry I missed you at Osh. Every time I'd make it over, you were busy, all
gone for the day, or gone on break.(I think Gary may have had too many beers
one night). All of the Eggenfelner installations on display were definitely
turning some heads. Even though most on display had the same engine, it was
interesting to see the differences in each builders installation.
