Hey Gary...
I recall some time ago your plans to alter the rudder trailing edge.
So at Oshkosh I examined your rudder. You weren't around (Friday
late morning) at the time for me to quiz you about it. It looked
much better than other RV-9's I have seen, although a tad thicker.
Are you happy with it now? Any in-flight rudder issues you have
noticed?
Thanks
Dan

Making it a tad thicker is exactly what I had in mind.
It is a 0.015" aluminum c-channel strip riveted over the entire
trailing edge seam. As you saw, it made for a nice clean and
straight edge, much stronger than the original. I have not
noticed any adverse effects on the flight characteristics, but
then I never flew it without this mod, so I've got nothing to
compare it with. I would/did not do this on any other edges,
just the rudder because of the thin metal it used. The vast
majority of time, you fly these planes without touching the
rudder pedals at all. I have never noticed any flutter, even
at 180mph, so my conclusion is that it was a worthy mod.

Gary,
Where did you find the 0.015" aluminum c channel?
Phil

Local sheet-metal shop. 1" wide 0.015" bent to a channel with 0.030 inside radius.
Cost $10.
Finish the trailing edge per plan, then add ProSeal inside channel and press over
edge. Rivet through with AN3 rivets every 4" or so. Smear excess ProSealto form
slight fillet. Quick, strong, easy, pleasing edge. I wouldn't do this on anything
but the riveted rudder trailing edge, and only if the factory edge bothersyou.

I was going to modify mine to look similar to a Cessna 172. I found your
idea very aesthetic pleasing, and doesn't appear to be a difficult mod ( now
that I see how you did it).
Thanks again Gary
Phil
