Has anyone had any luck with polishing out scratches put in the skin
during construction. As carefull as I am with skins, it never fails
that a mysterious scratch appears. I have one now on the top surface
of my wing skins.
Any successes out there?

I created a nasty, deep scratch on one of my leading edge wing skins
while cutting the holes for my landing lights a while back. After the
initial cursing myself phase I set about buffing out the scratch with a
small diameter scotchbrite wheel attached to my dremel tool. The
scratch was pretty deep so it took me a long time to get rid of the
pitting. After using the wheel, a finessed the surface with a
scotchbrite pad.

If they aren't very deep, don't worry about them unless you don't plan on
painting your plane ever. When you go over the skins to prep for paint,
you'll know which scratches need attention.

Matthew.
I used Dupont Veri Prime on my plane. They recomend using scotch brite
before priming, That Removed all the scratches.

Booger,
You may want to watch dimpling through the plastic. It will build up
on the inside of the female die and is very harf to remove.

So, like others have said. It depends on what you are trying to get as the end result... If you really do want it polished and smooth then here's the method assuming no paint.

Mathew,
If you plan to use a self etching primer, (I used Dupont 615 Veri-Prime)
they recommend going over the surface with a Scotch bright pad, cleaning,
and priming. This will cover most construction scratches. If it's deeper you
will have to fill it first.

Actually, it is better to shoot the self-etching primer first
then fill whatever scratch still shows after a light sanding. If you
fill between primer and/or finish-primer coats you can get
away with using a general purpose spot-putty versus some other
multi-part filler you would need to use to bond to bare metal.
Look ahead at your paint process. Primers will fill in just
about every surface defect, including your rivets if you lay it
on heavy and wet-sand.

80% chance I'll paint it but still want the option of going bald if I
want! :-) I thinkn what happened is I drug a skin across the top of
another and the corner put a lovely scratch clear across it. I'll
check the perfect polish site and see what they have.
Thanks to all for the suggestions.
