Sam Benjamin was reporting problems with his flap actuator last
January 2003. Sam, how was that problem resolved (or was it)?

seem to have excess grease, but the commutater was black and I

worked fine for a few more hour, But yesterday my flaps quit again.
If this is a continuing problem I think Van's should do something to
solve it.

George,
I think that part of the problem was my stupidity. Van's sent me the wrong
airspeed indicator. It had the flap speed shown as about 104 MPH. I had been
lowering the flaps at about 95 mph. Due to the RV-9 flaps being a lot larger
the flap speed is 90 mph. I am now slowing to 85 mph before lowering flaps,
and have had no further problems. Van's did send me another flap actuator,
but I have not had to install it. I bought a new A/S indicator with the
correct range markings. Van's would not take the other indicator back since
it had been inslalled. So I have an airspeed indicator for sale. I think it
is for an RV-6.

Ack, my airspeed indicator shows a flap speed of 100 mph. I never thought
to check it against the POH, but I will first thing next time I'm at the
hangar!

Sam - out of interest is it uncomfortable to fly slower than 85mph with no
flap? I would have thought down to 70 you would have no problems. Would be
interested to hear.
Thanks, Steve.

Hum, not "uncomfortable", but the nose is higher, visibility reduced a bit, and the flaps sure help slow down a bit. As does Idle throttle!

Steve,
My airplane handles very well at slow speeds without flaps. During
transition trainingI have the student full stall the plane and hold it in
the stall to show that it is controllable even when in a full stall, but be
aware that you are loosing a lot of altitude.

Steve,
In my RV-9A, I once flew about 30 miles at 60 mph just to get use to
the slow flight charistics of the 9. Most of that was with no flaps.
The nose was VERY high. Almost like taxiing a tail draggger. A bit
mushy that slow but not a problem with handling.

Larry/ Andy / Sam - thanks for that. I am pleased to hear these lower
numbers. I have flown too many glider tugs where people use the flaps to
slow down rather than slow down and then use the flaps. It always causes
problems in the long term. Steve.
