Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Fuel tank question

Author: "Don and Shirley" <cherokeepilots@...> Time: Sun Aug 17, 2003 11:01 am PDT Link

I'm beginning to wonder if there's an end to the fuel tank building
sequence...but that's not my question. The directions say to
machine countersink the 901 fuel tank skin where it's riveted to the
902 fuel tank baffle. No problem, I've done that and the skin is
plenty thick enough to countersink. A bit further on the directions
have you dimpling the rest of the tank where the ribs are riveted to
the tank. I'm curious if there's a reason why you countersink in
one place and dimple in another. Given a choice I like
countersinking because it seems the neater way of going...but I'm
inclined to follow the directions...especially when I don't fully
understand them (but I'm guessing I could counter sink all of the
fuel tank skin <g>).

The baffle is too thick to dimple so you need to countersink the skin. Same
basic issue you run into every time you rivet a skin or something on to a
spar or other thick piece. You could do the same for the rib flange area
but a dimple is generally stronger and easier to do. If you read some of the
old "what I would do different" stories, most people say they would dimple
everything they can. Difference in looks is minimal and the ease of
construction is significant.

Don,

Besides the baffle thickness issue that Curt mentions, there is very little clearance between the fuel tank skin/baffle and main spar re-enforcement bars near the root end of the wings. Dimpling the skin and baffle here would cause interference between the rivet tails and the spar because the extra height of the dimple. Even with the countersinking, you have to make sure you have all of the rivets squeezed enough so that they don't rub.

Curt,

The baffle thickness was something I hadn't considered - I suppose I
was too focused on the tank skin thickness. Thanks for pointing out
the obvious that I missed (seriously).

Todd,

That's interesting about the clearance. Shirley opined that the spar
doublers might interfere with a dimple in the skin but gave it up when
I mentioned that couldn't be the problem because there had to be
clearance for the rivet shop head and ***surely*** that would be more
than thickness of a dimple. She'll be glad to know she was on the
right track...especially since I nixed the idea. I must be a "girl
thing" but she loves being right especially when I'm wrong...of course
it rarely happens that way.<g>

Thanks to both of you...I reckon I'll keep on following the directions
the way Van's wrote them.

Don,
There is an end to the fuel tank... that's where you start on the second one. For what it's worth I have been working on both tanks at the same time. I have found a number of reasons for this. one is that you can look and make sure you are not making 2 right tanks, I would hate to make 3. also when you get set up you can do both tanks, for instance when you finally get the depth right on the countersink you don't have to set it again.

Tom
One tank sealed and the second may get it's first session with the &^%$ tonight.

Tom,

I'm really curious if anyone wrote and offered to swap of their extra
left tanks for one of your right tanks... ;-)

On a bit more serious note I've been a bit lax with the building since
Airventure. Friday my youngest daughter departs for college and I'm
expecting a lot more time to spend building! I'm planning to order
the fuselage either this week or next and I'm getting serious about
planning the panel.

Don,
Luckily I caught the flaw before any damage was done, so sorry there is no extra tank. as for the more serious note, My youngest daughter is packing up for her freshman year as well. I know how graduation activities followed by shopping for all the "necessities" can eat into the build schedule. Don't order the Fuse to soon... it will push mine back, as I too am filling out the form and trying to convince my wife that we will find the tuition money.
