What are the negatives of a 28v system? The batteries are a bit
heavier, but as far as cost of instruments, alternators, starters,
etc., it seems about the same as a 14v system. 28v Avionics can be
had for much cheaper on the used market? Why not go this way?

You can't jump-start your plane with a car. 12v systems come in very handy
when you're stuck with a dead battery and there's no FBO on the field.

The advantage of 28V is lights run using less current. You're more than
likely going to have some 12V stuff in your plane. A lot of the experimental
electronics are 12V. The biggest disadvantage of 28V, when it gets low, it's
harder to start and bring back up.

Some other problems come from finding 28V stuff, like landing lights, Aux.
fuel pump, interior lights. There is a lot of stuff out there which is easier to
come-by in 12V than 28V. Its cheaper to use fog lights, then buy aircraft
lights, the automotive fuel pump, then an FAA approved aircraft pump, stuff like
that. If you ever wanted to hook up your spare car radio to your panel, of
plug in your CD player. Just some food for thought. I think 95% or more of
builders choose 12V because it allows more room to do your own thing with readly
available stuff from radio shack, or the autoparts store.
