Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: 9A vs. C-172 room

Author: Rob Vermeland <rvermeland@...> Time: Wed Aug 20, 2003 8:23 pm PDT Link

Not having the opportunity to sit in a 9A, could someone tell me how
the inside space compares with a Cessna 172? I'm just asking about the
front seat area of course. I'm trying to decide if I can fit in a 9A
(I am circumferencially challenged) or if I need to spend the extra $$$
to build a 10.

Thanks,

rob

Hi Rob.

Like you, I do not shop at the petite shop either. 6 feet, 220 lbs.

I flew the -9A about two years ago at the Longmont fly-in with Tom
Green. While Tom is not that big around, he is tall and not small by
any means. The two of us fit quite comfortably and I remember
thinking that the -9A was at least as wide through the shoulder area
as a 172 if not just a hair wider...or at least that's the way it felt.

Hope this helps.

Hi Rob,

I found a website that has the interior dimensions of a C172 at:
http://www.flightadventures.com/172sp.htm
I currently own a C172 and am 6ft 1in and 210 pounds (with a LONG torso). I
fly sometimes with a friend of mine who has an RV6. I can't tell the
difference. He has a "foam" spacer that goes under the seat for short folks.
I just remove the spacer and have plenty of room. The difference in height
between the Cessna and RV has to do with the seats. The Cessna has the
chair-like metal construction, where as the RV is just a foam pad sitting on
a seat platform. Here are some numbers:

C172 Interior:
Length: 142 inches (including baggage area)
Height: 48 inches
Width: 39.5 inches
C172 Exterior:
Length: 26 ft 11 in.
Height 8 ft 11 in.
Wing Span 36 ft 1 in

RV-9A Interior:
Length: 47 1/2 - 51 inches (not including baggage area)
Height: 42 inches
Width: 43 inches
RV-9A Exterior:
Length: 20 ft 5 in
Height 7 ft 10 in
Wing Span 28 ft

Have a goodun'

Well, here are a couple of data points.

I'm 6'2" and 260 and fit just fine. I also flew my dad who is 6'4" and 300. Both of us fly in his 172 snugly and we fit into the 9a. It was not spacious, but we fit and still climbed out at 900fpm!

Rob,
I have over 700 hours in a C-172, and accumulated those as I was looking for
"my kit airplane". When I got to sit in the 9A, and then got to fly it, I
put the Skyhawk up for sale and ordered the 9, I had found the perfect kit
airplane (for me). I felt that it had more up front room than the 172, and
was a whole lot more fun to fly. Not to mention the fun I'm having building
this thing, as well as some really great people I've met along the way.
