Quick question on the F-721 Canopy deck.

I'm building a tipper and the plans show a modification to
the two pieces on either side of the cockpit, on top of the
longerons...the F-721 Canopy Deck. The drawings show a modification
that must be made to the F721B-R but I cannot find anything that
says you must modify the left one.

Anybody have any insight on this one. I don't want to go cutting
up aluminum if it's not necessary....I know the guy down the street
has done that in the past and has regretted it.

Thanks

Sam

Sam,

I have never built a tiper but it would seem to me that both sides
would be the same.

As always, the best info is to call VANS Tech Suppport.

Sam,

Mine is a tipper too. I made the cuts on both L/R aft decks. It
appears to be correct, but being the guy down the street...well you
know :)

Sam - since you are one of the cognoscenti ie building a tipper, let me
help. I don't have the plans in front of me but I have built a tipper. I
presume we are talking about the part that has the square hole with the
rounded corners cut through it. This is for the canopy latch to go through
and is the same left and right. You will see how this works if you look at
the plan showing the latching mechanism. I think there is some other
modification to the shape but I don't remember what. (Perhaps some other
shaping to make it even more elegant than a slider :) ) However left and
right parts are symmetrical. (The only lack of symmetry is in the locking
mechanism and the handle on the lhs of the finished canopy.)

Good luck,
Steve

I'm building a tip up as well and have found a chicken and egg problem
with installing said parts. The parts that require the drilled holes
for the latching mechanism is fabricated out of thick angle stock. I
made these months ago but haven't riveted them in yet because if I do
they will block the backside of the end rivets which fasten the top
skin to the longeron and the top edge of the bottom skin. If I put the
skin on first it will interfere with other tasks I have yet to do. So
for those of you who have already figured this puzzle out, can I get a
hint? What should I do?

You'll need to go ahead and rivet those angles in place... and try to
leave enough room for a few pulled rivets when you finally rivet the
top skin in place. (which will be a long time from now)

This angle is very difficult to rivet too.

I drilled (and filed) the holes for the canopy latches to slide
through after I finished my canopy and had a good idea of exactly
where they needed to be.
