Hello,
Does anybody know if the heat exchanger that goes onto the crossover
section of the exhaust just above the airbox comes with the kit?
This hooks to the carb heat door on the airbox via 5" or so of scat
tube. I have wasted just about the whole afternoon looking for it in
the garage with no luck. I can't find it on the plans either. I
went to Andy's site to look at his and sure enough it's on his
airplane. What are all of you doing?
Thanks,
Bryan Wood

Bryan,
I went through the same routine ! It is not included in the kit and is
available seperately from the Acc catalogue.

That little head muff is part of the FWF kit, or can be ordered seperate. Some have indicated that it may not be large enough, however my Carb temp gauge shows 150+ degrees when it's 40 outside.
The only trick to it, is that there is not much room to go between the end of the little stack down to the adapter on the airbox. I had to cut about 3/4" off the end of the muff and use a very short section of Scat. I have had some problems with the adapter on the top of the carb air box breaking the little welds free. I finally just used some rtv to hold everything in place and will see how that works for the next 100 hours.

Bryan, that heat muff should be in the box of Vetterman exhaust parts
that comes with the FWF kit.

Bryan,
Interesting replies regarding the part being included in the FWF kit. I
certainly did not get one in in kit or with the Vetterman exhaust !

I had to order the carb heat muff, the connector for the airbox, and
a couple of 2" clamps from Vans. No carb heat parts were in my FWF
kit (which included the exhaust).
After you've attached all the parts from the FWF kit, the project
turns into a game of order parts, install them, make a list of more
parts you need, repeat... The UPS man must think I'm building a
model airplane based on the number of small boxes I receive from
aircraft suppliers each week!
I don't know why vans doesn't include a large assortment of adel
clamps, small bolts and locking nuts, grommets of various sizes, a
tube of red RTV, tygon tubing, and tie wraps in the FWF kit.

Richard and Bryan, I just looked in my Vetterman box because I
remembered a heat muff in there, but that one turns out to be for the
cabin heater. I just called Gus and he said that the carb air heater
muff is not included because a number of builders simply open the carb
heat door and let warmed air from the engine compartment enter the
carb. The Car Heat Muff is listed on P. 14 of Van's 2003 catalogue for
$22.
