I bought a goodyear brand alternator belt equivalent to Gates 7350 at
the auto parts store, but when I tried it on my plane it was too
short.
I then borrowed a belt from another builder, but it is too long (36"
I believe).
The belt I borrowed seemed to be thinner and sat further down in the
groove than the belt I bought... explaining why the 1 inch difference
made a BIG difference in how it fit.
Is there a certain belt width I should be looking for?
The belt I bought sits with the top noticeably higher than the top of
the ring gear groove, and the one I borrowed sits with the top nearly
flush with the top of the groove.
I have an O-320 and the Vans standard 60A alternator.
Thanks,
Clay

Clay,
Same engine, same alternator. To center the adjustment I used a
Goodyear 15361.
Good Luck,

Clay,
After responding to your post I happened to think of a trick that my
father-in-law does on his airplane. He puts two belts on before
installing the prop. One gets installed and used, and the other is
wrapped in aluminum foil and tied so it doesn't interfere with
anything. If his belt should ever fail when he is on a trip the prop
doesn't have to be pulled to install another, because it is there
waiting to be used. He has done this for about 25 years insuring
that the original belt never fails. I've seen the spare during his
annuals when he unwraps and checks it, and it is always in good
condition from having it wrapped. It slipped my mind until after my
prop was on and safetied so I never did it myself.
