To all who have not riveted your flap and aileron trailing edges:
I was browsing through the Matronics RV-9 archives just prior to
riveting my flap trailing edges, just looking for any helpful tips. I
came across the following message from March 2002. (See below) My
plans (ser. #90492) still call out for AN426AD3-3 rivets. Clearly the
AN426AD3-3.5 are the proper length to use. Looking back on the plans
for the elevators and rudders, the callout is for -3.5 rivets as
well, and the elevator/rudder skins are only .016 vs. .020 for the
flap skins. I used the -3.5's on the flap trailing edge and they came
out great. Just an FYI.

Reference Drawings 13 and 14.
Both drawings call out AN426AD3-3 rivets for the aileron and flap
trailing edges. When starting to partially set the shop heads with
the
backrivet set on my first flap, I found that the rivets were not
holding
the skins and wedge together well enough to turn the flap over for
finish riveting from the manufactured head side. In fact, some would
not even hold when I back riveted the shop head flush with the skin.
In
belatedly checking the elevator and rudder drawings, I found that they
called for 3.5 length instead of 3, and I had no such problems with
those surfaces. In a return email from Bruce Reynolds at Van's, He
stated that they would change the drawing callouts to 3.5 length for
the
ailerons and flaps. I had no further trouble with the other flap and
both ailerons after switching to the 3.5s.
Just wanted to give a " Heads-Up " to others at this building stage.

Just had a problem with this on my left aileron and I now need to build
another one. I will try the 3.5 rivets this weekend on the right
aileron and let you know what happens.
