Hello everybody… I'm Ben from Bloomingdale, Georgia (just outside
Savannah). I recently became the owner of a "previously
enjoyed" RV-9A kit after a long search for the right aircraft to
build. When I say "recently" I mean "last week". I'm really
looking forward to getting started building, but I have a few weeks
work getting my workspace cleared out and organized. In the meantime,
a friend has kindly allowed me to store the kit (fuselage and wings)
in his hangar, while I have the empennage at home. The empennage is
about half finished, but I'm going to disassemble it, partly due to
some workmanship issues, but mostly to allow me to prime everything.
Unfinished clad material may be okay in some parts of the country,
but not in the humid Southeast! Plus, a couple decades in the
aerospace industry have shown me what corrosion can do to an
airframe… scary! Anyway, I found this group about a month ago,and
have enjoyed reading all your experiences. I've also gained a lot
of valuable information from the excellent websites some of you have
put together. I look forward to sharing my building story as time
goes on.
On a related note: It's a little early in the build process for
me, and a bit too expensive, but for those who are interested: I
noticed the "Warning to RV builders" ad from Chelton Flight Systems
in the March edition of Sport Aviation, and checked it out. Bottom
line is they have a Sun n Fun 2004 special going, in which if you buy
the Sierra EFIS-SV Sport before April 30, they will throw in a
Trutrak Digiflight II VSGV Autopilot. The bad news for me is that the
system costs $24,900. It's a super sophisticated two-screen system
that will tell you just about everything you need to know; it's just
too rich for my blood. Just thought I'd pass it on to those who are
in the market for such a system. Just for fun here's a link to a demo
that's kind of interesting:

No, I don't work for Chelton! Pardon the long post… nice to be
here!

Hi Ben,
Good to have you here. You may want to check out the EFIS at grtavionics.com. It's what I'm putting in.
Good luck
Frank
