The performance estimates shown on Van's website for a -9 or -9A with
a 135 hp engine are only estimates. Anyone know of one that's flown
with an 0-230 or 0-235 and how it's performed? I'm one of those guys
that is probably going to go with one of the lower powered engines
for acquisition and operating cost reasons, and I'm trying to decide
between the 118/120 hp engines and a 135 hp engine. I'd be perfectly
happy with the cruise speeds of the 0-200, but I would sure like a
little better climb performance than it offers.

IIRC, Van's first -9a demonstrator (which unfortunately
was in a fatal accident a few years ago) had an O-235 in it.
There is a guy in Canada that has an O-290 (140 hp) in his -

I've flown an RV-9A with a 118 hp O-235 and 160 hp O-320 (and one
with a 180 O-360...but we needn't get into that) and liked them all.
The biggest difference was when the airplanes were loaded near gross.
The 118 hp struggled a little on the climb. Actually, if you could
get all 118 hp, it would be fine, but there is no way to run a
hydraulic c/s prop on the O-235, so power available for takeoff is
limited. Maybe an electric c/s or variable pitch would be the answer.
The O-320 machine had power in abundance and was positively exciting
when it was light. Loaded climb was much more acceptable.
Speeds with both engines was fine...I could get an honest top of just
over 170 smph out of the 118 hp with a cruise prop.
A Canadian named Cutting (Bob Cutting?) has and RV-9A with 135 hp O-
290 and says its performs as well as his 150 hp RV-6A. I can well
believe it. The 9A has a great wing, and the factory 9A that I've
flown formation with will outrun my similarly powered RV-6 tailwheel.
If I had a good 135 hp Lycoming I'd install it in a 9A any day.

No no get into it please. I certainly have not made up my mind on an
engine, but if I can get a brand new kit O-360 for $13-14k or
something and put a fixed pitch prop on it, I will consider it.
Weight is close to a constant speed O-320 and climb and high altitude
performance is good. Yes you could go too fast if running flat out
while low but throttling back is not that hard in my opinion. Now if
I can get an O-320 for a reasonable price too then i'm sure I will
just go with the recommended. I would like to hear how it flew and
felt compared to the others though.

I had a discussion with an employee at Van's about the 0-235 versus
the 0-320 160 HP. He asked why I was considering the 0-235 and I
replied I wanted to use less fuel. He said if I fly the 160 hp RV-9
at the same speed as the 0-235 I would burn almost the same amount of
fuel per hour. So if I fly at 150 MPH in my RV-9 with 160 HP I can go
as far as the guy with the 118 HP engine on a gallon of fuel. But, I
can go faster if I want and have a much better climb with the 160 HP
engine. It seem like a no brainer to me. If I already had an 0-235
then I would probably use it. I don't and will have to buy something
whe the time comes and may try to find a 150 HP so I can burn auto
fuel. That will save a few dollars.

The guy at Van's is correct, I'm using a 150 hp Lyc in my 9 A now and am using the same setup in the new one that I am building now. It sips fuel at 150 mph and still has great performance as well with a 70/78 Sen prop.

Jay,
Why did you choose the 78 inch Sensenich instead of the
factory-recommended 77 inch prop? What's the peformance
difference between the 77 and 78 inch props?

I wanted to stay away from the 2600 rpm limit at low alt and I still have to be cautious now that the engine has been broken in. The plane will do 180 at alt @2420 rpm, takeoff @2230, rate of climb 1500fpm on a good day. I live in Fl. but if I lived in the higher climes, I might rethink the pitch. So far I'm Happy and I plan to use the same prop on 90866.

Jim,
That was my thought process exactly. I was considering the 0-235 for
the "economy". The low fuel burns while still going faster than any
other fixed-gear prouduction airplane really appealed to me. Then it
occurred to me: Why not just put the 160 in it and fly around at
reduced power settings if the fuel burn was important to me? That
way, I'd still have the extra power for hot/high days or extra speed
if there were instances that was more important than the lower fuel
burn.
I think though that I'm just going to watch for both a 135hp and
150hp engine when it comes time to make that decision. Which ever I
come across first will be the one I buy, knowing I'll be happy with
either.

One issue has not come up in this thread. I was told by my local maintenance
operation that O-320 parts tended to be cheaper than O-235. This is because
the O-320 has many common parts with O-360 and other Lycos. The 235 is more
unique. How true this is I dont know, but I thought I would mention it. I
bought a part life O-320-E2D after going around all theze issues.
