OK:
I used a little thread cutting oil and was able to slide the W-919
in. Then I lined up the line I drew on it, made sure that the 908
rib was 90 degrees to the spar, and drilled. The holes ended up
pretty close to the bend in the rib flange. I was worried that I
wouldn't be able to sneak the bucking bar in there. Knowing that
these parts are very accessable and relativly cheap, I re-adjusted
the rib more outboard. It was no longer 90 degrees to the spar but
the holes lined up in the middle of the flange this time...until I
drilled the hole closest to the leading edge. The rib curves there
and my new hole doesn't have enough edge distance. I guess I'll be
ordering a new rib and 919 tonight.
How did y'all adjust this rib for drilling? While you're pondering
that, I'll be moving on to the dreaded fuel tank.

I had emailed Vans earlier about the discrepencies in between the
manual and the drawings regarding the W-919 splce strip. Here is
their reply:
We revised the manual since you bought your preview plans and the
1/2" and 11/16" dimensions are correct. We failed to update the
drawing. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Most builders
don't read the drawings that closely.
Hope this helps.

I recall the W919 being a struggle to get in, but the alignment was
no trouble. Get a ruler, measure how far the 919 hangs out past the
skin, then put the ruler on the inner face of the 919 and measure
from the rib web to the edge of the 919. If both measurements are
the same (ish) then its time to drill. As I recall it's pretty hard
to get the rib lined up exactly all round, so get one part lined up,
drill & cleco it then line up the next bit.
You might have a piece in your trim bundle to make up a replacement
919.
