Question for you guys already flying. I was hanging out at the airport
the other day (that's why my plane is moving so slow) and fueled an RV-9
that came in. I have fueled numerous other RVs and had never noticed
this but it was slow to take fuel and would come back out the filler if
I filled too fast. I thought about opening up or adding another vent
hole up near the top of the ribs and considering opening up center hole
some. I know that these act as baffles but wonder if they needed opening
up slightly.
Thanks
Alan Jackson

Alan,
What type of pump were you using? I have never seen this problem in
the last 18 months I have been flying my 9.

I know what you're talking about... but it isn't that the first bay
fills up with fuel for me, it seems to be fuel sloshing up and
around the front and side skins when it is empty.
I've tried pointing the nozzle in different directions to minimize
this, and try to keep it immersed in the fuel to avoid splashing.
(is this a bad thing?) This usually lets me squeeze the pump handle
all the way and fill the tanks quickly at all but the most powerful
pumps.
The last couple of gallons do have to go kind of slow, though, and
it probably wouldn't hurt to open up the top hole just a bit in the
2 or 3 outboard ribs to let the air escape quicker. (the inboard
bays fill first because of the dihedral)

filling 'er up... $75.00 a pop.
Has anyone ever had the engine quit during a long left or right turn
with the low side tank selected without much fuel in it? Hasn't
happened to me but I can't help thinking it would be easy to do if
you only have a few gallons in the selected tank and it is on the
low side for a period of time.

Clay,
Keep that little ball in the center and everything will continue to feed
just fine. Uncoordinated turns (or even level) can cause the fuel to flow
to the outboard bays. Did fly a TriPacer once that wouldn't climb with
less than 5 gallons in the left tank due to pickup location.

Sorry, but not real knowledgeable on fuel pump / nozzle types. Looks
like any other pump / nozzle I have used. It's a stationary pump with
about a 1.5 in dia nozzle. Clay responded with similar issues and I
guess after reading his description, this is what I was seeing also.
Thanks
Alan

Are we talking an RV9 or RV9A there may be a difference here. The fuel tanks being at different angles. Also a 1.5 in nozzle seems large.
