Greg, the position of my nose and main wheels differed from Van's values
by less than an inch. According to my measurements, the moment arm for
the passenger differed from Van's number by 3/10 of an inch. My values
for the pilot are 1.3" longer because I included an extra hinge row on
the seat attachment.
Van's Section 14 Weight and Balance chapter (dated 2/19/01) is
misleading because it arbitrarily increased the Aircraft Arm in Samples
5 and 6. There are other errors in the table values.
For my plane (the weight and balance is on Dan Checkoway's site) which
is not untypical of Lycoming O320 installations, I cannot get an Aft CG
condition (with or without fuel) as long as the plane is under 1750
pounds and has less than 100 lbs of baggage. It is still within a
Forward CG with zero baggage, no passenger and a pilot weighing at least
65 pounds, regardless of fuel.
