Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Catto 3 Bladed Prop

Author: "jcsmithers2002" <jcsmithers@...> Time: Thu Apr 7, 2005 8:20 am PDT Link

For those who have installed the Catto 3 blade prop: were there any
special parts, hubs, extenders, spinners needed to complete the
installation on a basic RV9-A? How did you cut the spinner blade exit
holes, was a pattern supplied by Catto? Once installed, is there any
special maintenance required such as re-torque the bolts every few
hours of operation?

I had always planned on using a Sensenich aluminum fixed pitch prop
hoping they would resolve the 2600 RPM limit and possible compression
ratio problems by the time I was ready to buy, but it appears they
aren't even working the problem. This has been an issue with Sensenich
for several years now so I must assume they aren't willing to spend
the R&D money necessary to correct the problems and I'm not willing to
spend $2000 on a new prop that won't let my engine generate its
maximum rated horsepower and perhaps even create a safety issue.
Perhaps they don't have a large enough market to justify the expense
of correcting the problems and as long as customers are willing to
accept the problems as limitations, why spend the money? Just my
opinion, I probably don't know the real story behind this issue.

Ditto on the Sensenich prop issue... And with 100 LL selling for $4.40 per gallon here at Austin-Bergstrom Airport I might need to put a O200 in my RV... LOL :-)

J.C. here is a copy of my propeller invoice from Catto. Hope you can
read it with the crazy formatting that happens. For an extra $110, Craig
cuts, fits and balances the prop, spinner and backplates. I think you
need to retorque it at the first 10 hours and at each anual, but not as
often as for a non-composite prop.

Leland,

Thanks for all the great information! Was the 2.25 inch prop extension
($325.00) required because of a non-standard cowl / engine or do all
RV9s with standard Vans cowl and O320 engine require the extension?
Also I see you were charged for a spinner kit, did you not already have
one of these and if so, did you return it to Vans for a refund? Wonder
if I could ship my Vans spinner to Catto to be fitted rather than have
him supply a new one? Thanks again for the information, the Catto prop
is looking better and better.

Yes Craig does the fitting I think its an
additional charge of 115.00 for that but it
will be right when he is done with it.. if not
then you buy the fitting and the spinner I
vans charges more for the spinner if you don't
get it with the finnish kit I think.. not sure

I do know they only give you 90.00 credit for
it if you don't want it..

Darrell,

Highest price I've heard! When I asked why our gas was still $2.60 (100LL)
our AP manager said that since it was made only one week each year, and
that the wholesale price didn't go up, it would stay at $2.60. I was very
surprised. You might ask your manager. Or move to OVO!

I am beginning to think we are pretty blessed anyway, with $2.60 gas, $55/hr
rentals, and $42/month hanger rent. Of course all that will change about
the time I get get my 9A flying...

Yes I was shocked too, Trajen is $4.07 and Signature Flight Service is $4.40 per gallon for 100LL. No I will not be buying any fuel from them! At T74 the 100LL is still $2.43. We praise they daily for keeping the prices down!!!
