Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: flap actuator uh oh!

Oops, I discovered grease oozing out of the hole drilled into the flap
actuator for the safety wire. Has anybody encountered this? How did you
repair it. The actuator has a jack screw inside and it is filled with
grease. Ken at Van's says use some JB Weld to repair it. I don't have any
experience with that.
Help.
Thanks, Larry

Larry there are now two types of JB Weld out there for sale in local
stores that sale hardware supplies. The stuff is like epoxy or
resin and hardner for fiberglass, you mix the two parts together. The
old type which is industrial grade is just what it claims. I threw a
connecting rod through the case and repaired the hole with JB Weld
and ran that engine for another 700+ hours. Some may clain I was
looking for trouble, but the hole was not at a stress point where the
case half studs made up. I did this, as years ago,40 now our
mechanics on the oil rigs that worked on everything out there would
use JB Weld to repair just about anything that could not be braised
or welded do to changing the temper of the material and weaking it.
All I know is the stuff hardens to the point of a welding bead and
can be grinded down if needed to allow surfaces to mate or
acceessories to sit flat on whatever they need to be attached to.
The stuff literally turns to steel and will seal a hole the size of
your thumb as that was the size of the hole on my case from when I
sucked a valve and when the valve head fell off into the jug, and the
piston came up there was not enough room for everything and the
piston shattered and the connecting rod failed due to stress and
decided to exit the case on the top side within about an inch of
where the halves mate to make up.

Just my experience, but for what you want to use it for I would not
hesitate to use it there. Like I said this stuff turns to steel.
