Hello:
I wanted to press fit those 6 bushings that go into the 6 flap
brackets attached to the wings today. The trouble is the OD of each
bushing is .375" while the ID of each bracket hole is .309". No way
is that gonna fit!
It looks like a reaming may be in order. What have you all done?
If reamed, how big?
By the way, after thinking that there was no way my trailing edge
would ever turn out straight, I riveted together my left flap last
night and it looks great...nice and straight. I'm very relieved and
pleased. On these flaps you just don't know if they are going to go
together well until the very last rivet is squished. You get all
kinds of indications during the process that they are going to look
ugly.
Now I'm off to complete flap number 2.
Thanks

Thanks for the info. Van's says that the holes should be reamed up to
.374 but they didn't know about a loaner reamer. He suggested I get
back to them when the rest of the crew comes back from Sun & Fun this
week.
It would seem to me that I'll need to use my step drill to get as
close to .374 as possible but I'm thinking the nearest I can get is
11/32 (since I don't have the step drill in front of me I'm going from
memory). I may have to ream in a couple of stages.
Regardless, I'll let Van's sort it out for me.
Thanks again!

Do not use step drill to enlarge the holes you have to use a reamer
so the bushings fit tight. Van's for sure have a loaner reamer.
Van's screwed up they can surly lend you a reamer to fix. Be
insistent!

Good Idea.....You should not have to do any reaming....The bushings should be a press fit....And not to hard of a press....It will be a crap shoot if you ream and get it right...You don't want those things floating either....Have Van send you the right thing !!! Unfortunatly I found out the holes are too small only well after I
riveted the brackets to the wing skeleton. I think I'm stuck reaming
these myself but I'm not going to touch a thing until I get clear
instructions and the correct tools from Van's.
Thanks again.

Diameter of the hole is .380 on my micrometer. I found the bushings
and I can just start them in the hole by hand. A small mechanical
squeeze will seat them easily. Point 375 is specified on the drawing
but it is curious why they chose this dimention. It is not on any
drill chart. The closest I see is .95 mm (.0374 in) or .9652 mm
(.038 in) #62 bit. These would be hard to find for sure.

Bruce,
Drill charts commonly come in letter, number and fractional sizes.
The 0.375" is from a fractional chart, 3/8".

Just an update.
Van's disavows any knowledge of loaning out a reamer. They do recall
that a few of the earlier kits had holes that were too small.
Oh well, so they recommented that I use the Unibit to open the holes
up to 11/32 then ream them up to a .374" I think I can borrow a
couple of reamers from work to get it close to .374" then I think I
can buy a .374" reamer from a place near work.
Thanks for all the advice.
