Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: 615PP elevator reinforcing bracket

Author: "wpisar2000" <wpisar@...> Time: Tue Apr 19, 2005 6:37 pm PDT Link

I squeeze dimpled the #6 screw holes in the 615PP. The dimple deformed
the inside edge and left cracks on two of the holes on the edge side.
I ordered a new part but I am trying to figure out what I did wrong.
I'm thinking that I should have drilled the holes out but the #6 screws
were already a loose fit.

Also what is everone doing for the rivet holes for the plate nuts on
the 615PP. I went into the archives and saw a lot of suggestions from
C/S the 615 to dimpling the 615 and using C/S spacers. Now that I have
a 615 to play with I tried Countersinking the rivet holes and it didn't
turn out to bad.

Any help is much appreciated.

Bill--
I didn't drill the screw holes out either, because my #6 dimple dies
fit in the hole just fine without enlarging them. I haven't noticed
any cracks forming or anything. As far as the rivet holes for the
platenuts, I simply dimpled the stiffener bracket and dimpled the
platenuts (Van's didn't send me dimpled platenuts like they should
have) using my normal #40 dimple dies. I suppose you could
countersink the bracket, but I didn't find any distortion or
problems with just dimpling everything.

Good luck,
Steve

Bill,

I am not sure why your 615PP cracked either, but remember if the head
of the #6 dimple die does not fit you need to drill it to proper size
first...#28 I think, otherwise you can get cracks around the dimple
as
it tears the aluminum.

Also, I was able to grind down a female #40 die to allow me to dimple
the #6 nutplates (see 12/22/04 at: http://wills-
rv9a.com/My_Homepage_Files/Page5.html )

I hope this helps.

Bill,

Vans say you should always drill the prepunched holes. The reason being that
the punch process leaves tool marks along the axis of the hole and these may
lead to crack development if left in place. The match drilling process
removes the axial score marks and leaves a hole with no stress risers. I
think they had this mind as avoiding fatigue cracks developing from punched
holes in skins etc. But if you are overstretching material ie in the plastic
region you still run the risk of cracks forming from tool marks.

Richard

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Vans says to drill out the #6 screw
holes and debur before dimpling. I'm still trying to decide whether to
dimple the plate nuts for the rivet holes or C/S the 615PP. I guess it'll depend
on my mood the day I do it.
