Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Nose gear bolt direction

Author: "Matthew" <matthew@...> Time: Thu Apr 21, 2005 6:11 am PDT Link

DWG 46A, Side View

Is there a reason for the nose gear attach bolt to be inserted from the
back? Would the engine prevent it from being removed if installed from
the front?

In the very off chance the nut would come off the bolt, having it
inserted from the front, down would be better. I already put the hole
in my firewall but it is off, so I either need to enlarge it a bit more
to get the bolt in or just cover it up and insert the bolt from the top.

Put the bolt in with the head down, and use a hole plug in the firewall if
you have to. I had it the other way around on my 9A and it was a pain. The
problem is that in order to get the right grip length and prevent the
threads from being inside the hole, you'll need a bolt that ends up being
long enough that it contacts the firewall and makes getting the nut on the
bottom a huge pain.

Basically, do whatever you can to make sure that the grip part of the bolt
is the part that's taking the load from the landing gear - lots of RV's
have bolts here that are too short, and eventually the threads get
squished and the bolt starts to wallow out the hole. No fun!

Hi Matthew:
I´ve got the same questions about the nose gear bolt.
Looks like if we decide to remove it we must cut it or make a hole in the firewall.
Since there was a lot of RV´s with broken nose gear, it will be a good idea to think
about a easy removal leg.
For now I´l leave the bolt from firewall to forward direction.
I´m a little bit anxious to make the maiden flight.

Dwg 19 "hole penetration section" shows a 3/4" hole at location "E"
this hole is for attaching the nut to the bolt. The bolt should go in
from the engine side of the gear mount with the thread sticking into
the firewall. This the only safe way to install, by some chance the nut came off the bolt would not fall out (right away). As I remember the hole is not exactly correct. Mine was off a little and turned out
to be 1" dia. It would be very difficult to take the bolt out from inside the firewall. The best way to get the nut on is using my wife's tiny fingers.

Joe,

On DWG 46A, SIDE VIEW, their is a note with the bolt information: "Pass bolt
through 1" dia. hole in firewall bulkhead." I email Vans about which
diameter is correct and their response was: "Really doesn't matter, as long
as it clears the bolt hole. I'd go with 1 inch." So that is what I plan to
do.
