The main problem in getting a reasonable looking cowl with the WAM
120, is that the enginge is a vertical block rather than the
Lycoming horizontal block. Added to this there is a large
radiator/intercooler on the front of the engine. This dictates that
the cowl will have a large vertical opening at the front. Most of
the efforts seen to date have a 'basking shark' look about them.
I think the only way of getting a reasonably streamlined front end
to the cowl is to put a spacer between the engine and prop. It is
then possible to soften the vertical entry line.
It would be less of a problem if the fuselage was single/tandem
seating (In fact it could look like a spitfire/mustang).
I have asked Vans about putting in a spacer of about 3" between the
engine and prop and they felt it would be ok from an aerodynamic
point of view. I did some preliminary sketches and it seemed to help
the appearance considerably. It will be easier to work this out once
we have hung the engine. Not that we have got it yet.
