My RV9 Taildragger (90899) C-FTJE took to the air yesterday morning
(4 Aug 05) 1 year and five months after the start of the slow
build. The fairing are all that is left to complete, Paint too when
I can afford a pro to do it. Jack Dueck was the test pilot and all
systems performed flawlessly. I could not have found a better man
for the job. He landed it like he had flown it for 500 hrs. Must
have been the plane!!!Jack teaches many of the sheet metal workshop
for EAA and does so every year at Oshkosh. He has time on all the
RVs other than the 10. The empty weight is 963# (no paint or
fairings) with an O-320 H2AD and an 80" Sensenich. Takeoff was in
600 ft and 1500ft/min at 130 MPH. Field elev is 3500ft. True
airspeed at 8000 was 160 MPH at 2300 rpm. The 80" pitch will not
quit unload with the fairings not on. The climb numbers seem to
show that the horspower is there. The engine has the 9.5:1 pistons
and dynoed at 172 hp. I have to get to work on those fairings to
see what kind of difference it will make. It flys hands off
forever. I guess I must have drill that trailing edge spar in the
right place!! The next set of fun begins. What a great aircraft.

That is an incrediblly low empty weight and on par with many of the RV-4's
out there. I would think it would translate into some fabulous performance
numbers when you get all the fairings on!
