To those of you who expected to see the carbon fiber canopy system at
Oshkosh, I apologize. Four hours before I was to leave I got word my
mother had passed away. At 91, she was ready. I do miss her.
I did manage to get in a day at Osh late in the week, but couldn't do
anything to really show off the canopy. A couple of people saw it, and
Stein Bruch bought a carbon fiber baggage door for his -8 (their other
product.) Those who saw it seemed impressed. Stein may well have the
first carbon fiber canopy systme on an RV-8.
Status as of now: The slider fit perfectly out of the box, only a few
thousanths clearance between the rear skirt and the fuse. Total fitting
time would be probably an hour sanding, if you are really picky. The front
was another story. The tooling was taken from a -6, and perhaps there was
a change in the top deck shape; we don't know. Anyway, there were gaps in
the magnitude of 1/16ths where it should have been thousandths. It was as
bad as some of the aluminum canopies I saw. It is being retooled, using my
airframe as the plug. I really believe total time for everything on the
canopy will be less than 5 hours.
The sliding mechanism isn't finished, although it is far smoother than vans,
and stronger. The rear rail will hold 265 lb vs. perhaps 50 with Van's
plastic block. The holdup is perfecting the way the front of the slider
raises as it slides back in order to clear your head without ducking.
Also, it does slide back farther, making baggage loading easier.
Re-tooling is taking some time, so I expect the "Oshkosh Special" to be
extended. I can't get really good installation photos until I have a
finished windshield section, either. Sigh. . .
Anyone wanting a brochure send me you address. If you haven't ordered your
finish kit, production is only a few weeks away. It is more money, but so
far I am happy I spent it.

Bob, do you have a website for the canopy yet?

Bret,
The company is working on a website, but it isn't up yet. Truthfully, I am
happy they are spending more time on the tooling! My site has a little
about it, but is "unofficial." Go to http://www.missionmedia.org/RV-9A and
click on the "canopy" reference.
I have brochures. The reason they might be important is that they contain a
number that gives you free shipping if you should decide to order. Each
number is different, so I can't post that.

Bob,
Thanks for the update. I did check out your site but wanted more info.
Just thought I would try and save you a stamp. I am still in the
"tooling-up" stage so I will wait for the website. Good luck...it sounds
like a much-needed alternative.
