Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Pneumatic Squeezer Questions

Author: "top80ppg" <top80ppg@...> Time: Fri Aug 12, 2005 1:50 pm PDT Link

I'm about to start my –9 empennage kit. I've been
playing with Van's "practice" kit the past week or so learning
how to use
all the various dimpliers and rivet sets, etc. that come with the
Std. Avery tool kit. After hand squeezing a few 1/8-inch rivets, I
decided that wasn't going to work and bought a used pneumatic
squeezer from The Yard. The pneumatic squeezer works great except it
didn't come with any instructions. This is a Chicago Pneumatics
squeezer. The questions I have are:

1) What's is the best way to adjust the set (or is it upset)
height of the rivets, use shims or an adjustable set holder?

2) I've noticed that Avery sells an adjustable set holder for
214-style pneumatic squeezers for $69, but sells replacement parts
for adjustable set holder in their hand squeezer for $39.25 total.
The adjustable set holder from the Avery hand squeezer fits my
pneumatic squeezer just fine and works like a champ! Does anybody
know it there is a difference between the adjustable set holder Avery
sells for pneumatic squeezers versus the adjustable set holder they
sell for their hand squeezer? Or, are they just jacking up the price
and selling the same part?

3) My Chicago Pneumatics squeezer has what looks like a
"safety" button located just below the yoke. I can't
tell what it
does. Can anybody tell me what that "button" does?

Thanks,

Scott

Get/use an adjustable set holder.

I believe they are one in the same... I don't know about the parts
vs. whole set though. Use the one from your squeezer if you don't
mind switching it back and forth.

On mine, it controls how far back the piston retracts. One way it
retracts all the way, the other way it only retracts about 1/2 way.
Retract it all the way to put the squeezer sets in and retract half
way when setting rivets.

Thanks Matthew,

That's pretty much what I figured. I did call Avery and was told the
adjustable set holder for the pneumatic squeezer "has longer threads".
I'll check the thread engagment of the set holder from the hand
squeezer and maybe add a shim or two to make sure I have enough threads
to cary the load. That sure beats $69 for set holder.

Get an adjustable set. I have an Avery one in my hand squeezer, but I
use one from Clear Air Tools in my pneumatic squeezer. It's beefier
than the Avery one but costs about the same.
