Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: Shimming required?

Author: "Merems" <merems@...> Time: Sun Aug 21, 2005 6:20 pm PDT Link

Gents,

Have any other builders needed to shim about 0.063" (1/16") between the F-724 (Aft Fuselage Bulkhead) bottom flange and the F-623 (Corner Rib). To refresh some of your memory this is the F-623 is bottom corner rib that extends to the side of the baggage bay to the side skins. This is the rib that get notched for the flap pushrod and also get trimmed for the step tube to clear. The F-724 is the vertical bulkhead in the baggage bay. It appears that without shimming the side skins will not line up properly with the bottom skin and corner rib flange.

Attached is a image from the plan set.

Any thoughts?

Paul

Hi Paul,
I didn't have to use any shims. The corner rib is trimmed so it
doesn't overlap the flange of the bulkhead. There is an overlapping
piece that I don't remember the number for at the moment, but it
spans the two pieces. I have some pictures on my site which may or
may not be helpful:

Paul,

I am having the same problem with the flange tab of the 724 not
reaching all the way to the corner rib. It does seem like a shim is
required. What did you finally do to solve this?

Thanks!

Mike

Mike,

I will be shimming this area. I believe a .040 thick shim will do the trick. I will also put in a .020 shim behind the rivet in front of the .040 thick shimmed rivet. This way there will be a nice gradual transition. I might even make a tapered shim. When I built my RV-4 I became very proficient at making tapered shims. I should have the side skins riveted on in the next few weeks.
