Home -> RV-9 and RV-9A topic: sliding canopy bonding

Author: "bunderhill2004" <bunderhill2004@...> Time: Tue Aug 23, 2005 8:58 am PDT Link

I started trimming the canopy yesterday. The whole process seems
straight froward enough although measure three times cut once will be
the watch word.
A few of my builder friends have started bugging me about bonding
rather than screwing and riveting the plexi to the frame. They say its
the newest process and removes the danger of cracking both in assembly
and operation since there are no drilled holes in the plexi and thus no
stress concentration points.
Has anyone heard of this bonding process? Apparently the glue used is
similar to proseal but lighter (beige) in colour.
How much cracking has been hapening anyway?
Regards, Bruce.

Having just completed this part of the process, it occurs to me that
you will have considerable trouble aligning and holding the skirts,
reinforcement strips, and other ancillary components if you don't
have any holes to cleco through.

Mike, I think you are correct, and I certainly appreciate your
comments. I don't feel like pioneering and I don't think it is
necessary, so I am going stick to the classic rivets and screws. My
friends can experiment on their own airframe. Only thing is... if I
get a crack, I'm going to be buying them coffee and hamburgers for a
year! I finished the trimming tonight and it turned out pretty good.
It took me almost as long to clean up the plastic dust out of the
shop as it did to cut the plastic, and I look like a powdered mime.
I am disappointed in that the wind screen at the roll bar is too low
by 3/32. I have arleady cut 5/32 off the roller bow bottoms so it
looks like some serious shimming to get the wind screen at leat even
with the slider bow. I am now considering shims under the roll bar
attachment bottoms. I seem to remember similar problems by others.
