I just went through the same issues as you.  Here goes...

Get an oiled, cast iron cylinder type compressor.  Not oilless.
I bought a Porter Cable ~7HP / 25 Gallon compressor.  $370 at Lowes and no payments until January.

I needed the new compressor to replace an old dog of a compressor that wouldn't handle my HVLP siphon feed Campbell Hausfeld gun.   Rated at 9.7 SCFM, it will do HVLP painting well.  The only shortcoming of this compressor is continuous use of a die grinder.  Since I won't be a commercial mold maker, etc, I'll be ok.  I can put another tank or 2 in series for radically large jobs and probably never willneed to.

Oilless will prevent total loss of hearing, keep your neighbors happy, not scare the dog, won't shatter the windows, will prevent divorce, and might even bring the RV-List back :-).  Oilless is the way to go.

Change oil after the first 40 hours.  Keep your tank dry and tools oiled before every session.

Subject: [VAF Mailing List] Help w/ Compressor selection

I am getting ready to buy a compressor and I need some advice on what kind of flow rate I need.  I plan on painting my ownairplane most HVLP spray guns need a pretty good flow rate, I think. Sears guns say a minimum of 7 SCFM@40psi, but 'significantly' more for continuous spraying.  Other vendor spray guns give numbers anywhere from 10-12 SCFM@40psi.  The tank I am considering only does 9.6 SCFM@40psi.

Is ther anyone out there with painting experience (w/ HVLP gun)that can tell me how strict these flow rate numbers are?  Can I still get good performance with 9.6SCFM?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin
