Home -> Vans Air Force topic: Digital micrometer worth it?

Author: "Kevin Hanson" <kmhanson3@...> Time: Sun Aug 12, 2001 1:19 pm PDT Link

As I am putting together my shop, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the digital micrometer/calipers. Are they that much more accuratethan the 'analog' ones? Are they worth the price difference? Is that level of accuracy need in building an RV?

Thanks,
Kevin

If you can read a standard one (like a dial caliper) and mic, them a digital
is overkill. However, being a machinist, I have both and use both.

I've had no experience in using them while building an RV, but from
personal experience using them at work and other places, here are my
answers:

More accurate? No. Even the most expensive digital models are no
more accurate than their analog counterparts, and you can read a good
set of analog instruments just as accurately. It just takes a little
longer.

Worth the price difference? Yes. I find the digital ones much more
convenient to use, just because of the speed of use. I can make
multiple measurements very rapidly, something that requires a fair bit
of practise with the analog equivalents. The speed of use and
convenience also makes it something you're likely to *want* to do more
often, just because it's so simple. Measure twice, cut once.

Is that level of accuracy needed to build an RV? IMHO, it's not
needed. As long as the aircraft is straight when you're done, it'll
fly just fine. If you're Bruce Bohannon, trying to eek out every last
bit of performance, speed, and drag, or if you're going for Oshkosh
Grand Champion Homebuilt, then maybe it's necessary.

Kevin,

It's like a pneumatic squeezer, necessary no, nice yes.

I sutumbled onto a demo unit for $50.00, hope I can find a $50.00
squeezer to match!

You can purchase a digital caliper for $20-30 dollars. I'd
recommend that over a dial caliper or micrometer of any kind. I have
all four and use the digital micrometer 99.9% of time...
