Home -> Vans Air Force topic: Crossover ehaust for RV-6 on O-320 Lycoming

Author: "Victor Jacko" <vicwj@...> Time: Wed Aug 15, 2001 8:27 pm PDT Link

Hi, I am new to the list and have a question which has probably been asked
and answered before:

Is there a horsepower/ economy advantage to using the crossover exhaust as
advertised in Aircraft Spruce or any other make or model?

Do we have someone with back to back tests to prove that they in fact do
work? If so what is the brand and what improvements did you experience in
speed, climb rate, fuel burn. etc?

Thank you for your help.

Vic,
About to buy an exhaust system!

Victor;
I'm not sure what the horse power advantage of a
crossover exhaust system is over,BUT, horsepower
advantage aside, the Vetterman system is the way to
go. It is very reliable and probably does provide some
horse power boost. For what it is worth, I would use
Vetterman's system even if it didn't give a HP boost.
You can't believe the kind of junk systems there used
to be available for the RVs. They were cheaper, but in
a few hours, the owners were replacing them with
Vetterman's because they just broke on account of poor
design/fabrication techniques. That's my 2 cents on
the subject. Happy Landings!!

Hi Vic,

There was an earlier response to this email recommending you look
seriously into the Vetterman system. I would agree with that post.

Additionally, there are some closeup shots of the excellent
workmanship you get with a Vetterman system at
http://www.metronet.com/~dreeves/vetterman/VettermanExhaust.htm. The
attractive hand in some of the images is mine.

Regards,
Doug

Doug, Thank you for the info. I am building a Kitfox Series 5 Outback
with the Lyc 0-235 L2C with Dynafocal mount and want to get the "best
crossover system available. It looks like from everyone I talk with the
Vetterman is the best in the business. The only problem is adapting the
system to my airplane. Can you be of any help in this matter?

The bottom of my oil pan is 7 1/2inches above the hull of the firewall and
the center of the intake is 8 1/2 inches from the firewall. Do you think
any of the systems in stock for any of the Van's will work?

Do you know who makes the systems sold by Aircraft Spruce?

Thanks for your help.

Your hands are attractive! (only because they are working)

Vic

I'd just call him direct at (605) 745-5932. I'm sure he can get you
squared away.

Best of luck,
D
