I am building anRV8 , and I have the electric pitch trim. Gtrez Aero makes a trim linkage which moves the location of the servo. from the tail to the fuselage. He has two sizes, and I am not sure which one to order?? Thanks. algrajek@m... (mailto:algrajek@m...)

HiDoug,
No extra length for tooling on the rear spar. There is an extra
overhang on the root end of the rear spar that will become the attach
point of the rear spar to the fuselage.
Good luck,

Just FYI,
There are (3) ways to get to the VAF-WWW site:
1. www.vansaircraft.net
2. www.vansairforce.net
3. www.metronet.com/~dreeves/vaf.htm
They all take to to the same place. On occasion my ISP is down for
15 minutes (maybe once a week) for maintenence, etc. It's usually
not down for very long. If you are COMPLETELY bored and want to view
their online 'log' of down time you can go to
http://www.metronet.com/motd
Hope you all have a great weekend. I'm going out in the shop in 4
hours, when the wife gets back from her errands and I'm officially
off baby duty (for a few hours) <g>.

Hello Doug: The overhang you refer to is excess length Van's wisely
included into the rearspar so that you have a means to support the rear
spar as it is being located relative to the rest of the wing while in its
jig. It is this excess material that is clamped to a lower bracket of your
wing jig. This overhang will be trimmed off later.

Mat
Hi all, this is a first post for me and I found all other posts
intersting. Let me first start by introducing myself. My name is Doug
Mueller and I live in Las Vegas, NV. I am currently building an RV-6
#24186. I have been at it off and on since 1995. Although it has been
slow to start I am in the wings now with a renewed spirit. Everything
is going relatively smooth. My questionI have is "On the rear spar
of the wing is there an overhang like the mainspar for tooling of 3/4
inch?" If I read the plans right,I would say no, but reassurance
would be great. I have several builders in my area but I am not
familiar with them as I have been working in my garage until
recently. I would also like to meet anybody inthe area currently
building. Any help is always appreciated. Thanksin advance.

Doug

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to move the servo into the
fuselage? Surely the weight of the electrical wiring to the tail
would be lighter than a cable actuator?

I'm planning thesame option on my 7. The idea is to take the weight off of the elevator itself and place it in the tail fairing. It's probably not a hugedifference in CG either since you are only moving it forward about 2-3 feet. Whatever CG benefit you would have received is negated when you add the cable assembly. My best reason is to get that servo and its related wiring out of the elevator. The less complex the elevator the better in my mind. You can fly without ailerons, you may evenbe able to do without rudder. Lose elevators, and you're toast. Less complexity in the elevator means more reliability to me, even if it's just for my own self-assurance.
My biggest question is: Is that servo in the tail fairing going to cause interference with the ELT antenna?
Anybody have this setup flying that can share comments?

I have about 10 hours on my RV now, and love the electric trim. Especially since I have it on my stick. These birds are fast and squirlly sometimes, and it really reduces the workload if you don't have to take your hands off of the stick and turn a trim knob. As far as relocating the servo, I wouldn't. The design that currently exists is flawless IMHO. Don't reinvent the wheel if you don't have to. Iwish I would have realized this long ago, and I would have been flying sooner!

Kevin,
If you use the Gretz elevator trim, you'll have to slightly modify the
Van's elevator trim horn that comes with the kit for electric trim. The horn
needs to be slightly larger or the Gretz control cable will interfere with
the bottom of the elevator/trim tab skin. It's probably easy to do, but I
didn't do it because I already had mine done and riveted on. So I have the
Gretz trim system I could sell you for a good price if you are interested.
