As long as you have enough meat on the back of the cowl for the hinges, you
are fine. Make sure you have your spinner back plate installed, along with
the extension (or a spacer of some kind to simulate) Don't go by
measurements, go by what fits. I have a helpful section on my website on
drilling the cowl using a light from the inside that worked well.

Hmmm....odd...all I did was trim the flange off, and cleaned up the
edges...a little here and there, but the most I trimmed off after the flange
was trimmed was probably 1/2" at most.

Thats pretty much the same as what I did. I fit it together before I
cut anything and found that all that was needed was to cut off the
flange and it was a good fit with a little touch up. I didn't bother
with the measurment. I just made the cowl fit the airplane then the
top and bottomk fit each other.
Mike, try fitting the bottom cowling up in place and see what you
have. If you find that you have trim too much, I would call Vans and
see if you got the wrong cowl or something.
