Home -> Vans Air Force topic: Cowl seal fabric measurements

Author: rv6bldr@... Time: Sun Aug 26, 2001 4:36 pm PDT Link

I am attaching the cowl seal and I can see where the dimensions will
need custom fitting in certain areas such as the nose area. But, on
side and rear areas, how much seal should be above the baffle when
there is 1/2" clearance between the baffle and cowl?

Also, it appears that about 1" of the seal extends below the baffle
for attachment with the rivets. Is 1" about right?

About 2" above the baffle and 1" below will work fine. Also, when riveting
on the baffle material with those wide head steel rivets, get yourself some
#6 washers and put them on the rivet head and hold it (carefully) while you
squeeze the rivet. This is because the steel rivets pull really hard and
will dimple your baffle material and look all goobered up if you don't. I
think there are photos of those on my website.

Hey Jer,

Have you considered a plenum?
Check out:
http://www.homestead.com/RV8A/files/index.html

Jim Andrews is a local boy and even though his is a -8A, there are lots
of good ideas for under the hood.

Jim had his first flight yesterday too. I haven't heard back from him
how it went but if he prepared for the flight anything like he has
prepared his plane, it went perfect.

Anyway, the plenum is how I will go, except with hinges vice camlocks
to secure the lid. Only problem to think about is releasing all that
heat at gas stops... thinking about some kind of sliding affair to
manually open the plenum top and vent out the top of the cowl.

Whichever, good luck getting it all sealed up. Still trying to make
those cowl halves fit together right.

Mike,

A friend of mine did his -6 that way and Ihad considered it.  I'll check out Jim's site and chew on it for a couple of days.

How's the cowl going?  I was surprised how well mine fit. I will do very little cosmestic glassing to get it where I want it.

Onward,
Jerry

this, but my magnet was not strong enough to keep it up while taxing,

forgot to close the door. My passenger was observant enough to note
that the door came up while we were in flight. I have tried it once
more and it closes OK, but I want to make sure at some flight
conditions it is not rattling open to closed.
