Home -> Vans Air Force topic: Cowl door(was cowl seal)

Bernie,

Sounds like a novel idea to me!  I have been thinking about a door that opens inward too.  I want a spring latch that holds the door in the closed position.  Push the door down to a certain point and the door catches and stays open.  Push the door a little further inward and the spring releases and closes the door back to the closed position.  I may have to invent the mechanism that would fit the cowl door.  I have seen this type of spring before, but can't remember where.

Jerry,

I have stumbled upon something the last few days. My oil door hinges inward so that the cowl pressure seals it instead of opening it. I got that idea from Rich Jankowski. Rich uses a rare earth magnet to keep it closed until he gets ram pressure inside. I tried this, but my magnet was not strong enough to keep it up while taxing, so I put a nut plate and screw. Recently I made a flight and had forgot to close the door. My passenger was observant enough to note that the door came up while we were in flight. I have tried it once more and it closes OK, but I want to make sure at some flight conditions it is not rattling open to closed.

When you are taxing or stopped , it automatically opens to let the heat out :>)
If it seems OK, I'm thinking of putting two doors on my next project.

Mike,

A friend of mine did his -6 that way and I had considered it.  I'll check out Jim's site and chew on it for a couple of days.

How's the cowl going?  I was surprised how well mine fit. I will do very little cosmestic glassing to get it whereI want it.

Onward,
Jerry

Hey Jer,

Have you considered a plenum?
Check out:
http://www.homestead.com/RV8A/files/index.html (http://www.homestead.com/rv8a/files/index.html)

Jim Andrews is a local boy and even though his is a -8A, there are lots
of good ideas for under the hood.

Jim had his first flight yesterday too.  I haven't heard back from him
how it went but if he prepared for the flight anything like he has
prepared his plane, it went perfect.

Anyway, the plenum is how I will go, except with hinges vice camlocks
to secure the lid.  Only problem to think aboutis releasing all that
heat at gas stops... thinking about some kind of sliding affair to
manually open the plenum top and vent out the top of the cowl.

Whichever, good luck getting it all sealed up.  Still trying to make
those cowl halves fit together right.
