Home -> Vans Air Force topic: Mag problem and prop torque

The points are grounded through a low resistance coil. Your ohm
meter will not read this low. This is normal. To check the timing
you need a system that checks the impedance. These devices used AC
or pulsating DC. Buy or borrow a mag timer.

my

twice. It read grounded continuously. Has anyone heard of this? Is
it field repairable? I've got a call in to Bart but haven't heard
yet.

Ahh, Jeff...I just went through this.  Not a problem.  You get a "soft" ground from the unit to the engine.  While it reads a ground, it's not the real thing.  They will always read ground all the time, except when the points actually open when the engineis running.

Don't sweat it.  Drive on.

I have a problem with the Slick mag on my engine from Aerosport.  I was confirming the grounding circuit to the P lead and discovered that the P stud on the mag has continuity to groundall the time.  I put my meter on it, after removing the wires, and rotated the engine thru twice.  It read grounded continuously.  Has anyone heard of this?  Is it field repairable?  I've got a call in to Bart but haven't heard yet.

Second question is where to get a 3/4" extention to torque a Hartzell constant speed prop?  Sort of like a real long crow's foot.  The bolt heads are only accessible from the sides.  Aircraft Spruce doesnt have one.  Or is there another way?

Thanks,  Jeff Farrar,  RV8A  N4ZJ, Top skin, canopy, fitting wings to go.

Try using a 1/2 inch to 3/8 square drive converter as a mini extention.
This has worked for me when I needed a mini extention. Also, different
manufactures of crows feet are of different proportions. The one from
MAC that I own seem to work best for close quarters work, while the
Craftsman are good all around crows feet. The Husky single crows foot I
purchased had the extra length I needed. Point being the different
manufactures versions of the crows feet might fit you need..

Paul's right, I had the same issue. BE SURE when the wire ( P-Lead)is
removed from the mag- the wire reads dead short to ground ---- Be
careful the mag is now "hot" when this wire is removed. To check for a
grounded P lead, check the lead wire out of circuit ( i.e. un bolted
from mag). This way you ensure you are supplying a ground source when
the mags are off. BTW, the above mentioned wire check should be done
with the mags off and the key out of the switch. You want to ensure with
the mags off and key in your pocket that you have a ground connection to
the mag......
