Group,
I have a hint of what may be a good deal on a Lycoming O320. I'm
looking for some feedback from maybe either some of you that are
running the O320 in the 6 or have other experience with these engines.
I have not considered anything except the O360 if buying new as the
price difference between the O320 & O360 is negligible.
I'm leaning towards a constant speed prop with either choice. The
spec's on Vans site shows about a 7 mph difference in speed of course
favoring the larger O360.
Thanks for any input.

Doug,
I have 400 hrs on a -6 with O-320 160 hp constant speed. I have a hanger buddy with a -6 O-360 fixed pitch.
The comparisons are pretty interesting: I can get off the ground MUCH faster than he can and beat him on the initial rates of climb. However, once he gets up to 120-140kts, I can't keep up if he's maxed. At altitude, he has me by 5-8 kts. The other interesting comparison is that on descent, I can just point the nose down, hold throttle setting and not worry about shock cooling cause I can keep power on - the prop holds me back. The O-360 FP will over-rev doing that and he must be much more careful of shock-cooling.
I fly with many other RV's from RV-4's to -8's and there is no doubt that the 150 hp might be fine for solo flights, but is way too little to keep up with others; the 160hp is OK as I described above; the 200hp IO-360 is nice for short flights, VERRRRRY sexy with alarming rates of climb, but burns too much gas for cross country and is a bit heavy. Nearly everyone I fly with is convinced that the 180 hp O-360 with a CS prop is the best all-around engine/prop combo for RV's.
That's what is going in my next RV-8.
Hope this helps,
John Ely

Doug,
I think you hit on the key......constant speed prop.
If you can get a good deal (and it depends on how good a deal it is)
then go with the O-320 if it saves you a bucket of money. Otherwise,
all things being equal, I'd go with the O-360 and the extra
horsepower.

Doug-
We have the O-320 with the CS prop, climb performance is
excellant. It will climb with the O-360 180hp fixed. The O-360
takes the advantage in cruise. The solo accelleration and climb
performance is similar to the O-360 CS with two aboard. I
haven't flow an 0-360 CS solo but it's got to be spectacular.
If you get a good deal on an O-320, you won't be disapointed.
The RV's are fast no matter what engine you put in them. 7
knots in cruise at 160 kts is not that much to miss.

Doug;
I'm sure that those with personal experience will have good input for
you. Also consider the following data from Textron Lycoming:
O-320-D @ 75% ( 2450 rpm ) performance cruise ( 120 HP ) 10.0 gal/hr -
at 65% ( 2350 rpm ) economy cruise ( 104 HP ) 8.8 gal/HR.
O-360-A @ 75% ( 2450 rpm ) performance cruise ( 135 HP ) 10.5 gal/hr -
At 65% ( 2350 rpm ) economy cruise ( 117 HP ) 9.0 gal/ hr.
