Hi All...

I did some more flyig this morning, and I also added a new page to my web for test flight data... There's not much up there yet, but that's where I'll be posting the information for each flight...

This morning the aircraft T/O weight was 1382 lbs and the density altitude was just above 6000'. I made a normal takeoff and stabilized my climb at 110 mph and about 1000 fpm. I then climbed to 9500' for some speed tests... The most I could get was 2450 RPM and 140 mph indicated (160 mph ground speed on the GPS). I do not have any gear leg fairings or wheel pants installed yet... I then descended to the pattern for some T&G's... I made a total of 5 landings and taxied back... The plane will float for a long time if I come in at 80 mph on final... Next time out I will try some 70 - 75 mph final approaches...

Bill:
I'd also be interested in how much altitude you lose on any engine-out
practice on a 180 degree and 360 degree turn. At the RV Forum last week, Tom
Irlbeck, who does a lot of flight testing for RVers talked about getting
that data early..

Bill.
Rock on. And as a note from bob's good comment, in my 6A, it takes
me 350ft at departure climb angle and speed (110mph), to do a 180deg
engine out turn back.
45 degree turn is best rate I found. So Decision height for me is
500ft agl on departure. I know I can make a 180 and land (near the
runway I hope) at that height. Anything less is too marginal for me.

Bill,
If you can get someone with a calibrated airspeed indicator to fly
formation with you, a check of your pitot static system can be made.
Your top speed sounds a little low, even without fairings, and the fact
that she floats at 80 mph on approach, might indicate that your
airspeed indicator is reading low. Just a thought. Seventy five is
about as slow as I let the Doll fly on final. Eighty mph feel about
right at most weights!
I am looking forward to seeing your machine at the Waco fly-in.

Which brings up the question, Danny. What's it like to know that everybody
with an interest in RVs who wants to check what date it is, sees your pride
and joy first? (for those who don't know: The Beautiful Doll is the featured
plane for May on the RV calendar!)

Bob,
Well, it feels like a proud father I guess! The last RVator had stories
from the people of Van's that have built RV's and "what they would do
differently". One of the guys said that he, still stops at the hanger
door just to look back and admire his airplane. I know the feeling.
It's a feeling of pride and a sense of accomplishment. I still look at
the Doll and think, I can't believe I did that! Finish you RV and I
guarantee you will feel the same.
