Listers,
While scanning through the JC Whitney catalog, I noticed several
different types of strobes & lights that I think could be used as nav
lights. This got me to asking myself why shouldn't I use these in an
airplane. They are definitely much cheaper than Whelan.
Anyone been down this path.

I was going to go with some really cheap position lights and then I read
somewhere that some DAR's are pretty particular about the lights being the
proper color and brightness. I don't remember where I read that but it
might be in the archives over at the "other" list :-) I don't think that
there is any FAR requirement for Experimental planes but you still have to
make the DAR happy or not fly at night. I went with the Whelen Position
lights just to keep from having to worry about it.
Strobes on the other hand are not even required to be on the aircraft so I
intend to go with Nova. They make strobes for Police cars and Ambulances.
In fact I think one of their engineers used to be a Whelen guy. Their power
supplies are lighter, brighter and considerably cheaper than Whelen and they
have a better selection. The guy from Nova told me that their power
supplies will work with any Whelen strobe head. This was important to me
since I went with the rudder mounted tail strobe/position light from Whelen.
I intend to put the Hide-a-Flash inside my sheared wingtips. Nova's website

I just noticed that they have a halogen flasher as well. That might work
well for flashing the landing lights. Can't find the cost though.
I wonder if Nav lights from the marine industry would work???

Inspectors can be critical of proper lighting at inspection time. Another
FAA blessed alternative to Whelans are Aeroflash units, about $425 for the
whole setup (http://www.aeroflash.com/plane.html#experi).
They are more cheaply built and don't have the oomph of the Whelans, but I
have never been able to tell the difference in real world conditions.

Phil, strobes per se are not required but an anti-collision light is.
Strobes are just one way of satisfying that requirement.

C`mon. You`re building an RV, it`s a real airplane,
not some flimsy flying lawn chair. Suck it up and use
real airplane strobes, lights, and everything else.
When you get to the end, you`ll be glad you did.
