Hi all,
Here is my dilemma. I have just about finished up the emp. kit and
am working on the left elevator. Where I ran into the problem was
when I tried to close up the elevator tabs that must be bent before
installing the trim tab. I messed it up royal and ended up ordering
a new skin. I was thinking about bending those tabs using a hand
seamer. Any suggestions? Also, well after the right elevator was
closed, I remember I needed to tie the ribs together with a bit of
RTV. Is this a problem or should I stop obsessing about it?
Thanks for any comments or suggestions.
John

John... Here's what you do... Cut off those tabs and then make some
little end ribs from your old skin and rivet then in place... It will
look great and is easy as pie...
Wish I would have done it...

John,
The silicone is put along the rear fold of the elevators to stop
vibration that causes stress cracks to develop at the aft end of the
stiffeners. If you did not use the silicone than watch the skin at the
last stiffener rivet on both top and bottom for cracks. If they
develop, drill out the last rivet and force silicone seal through the
rivet hole to fill the area and dampen vibration that is causing the
crack. Replace the rivet with a #3 countersink pop rivet.

I'm just finishing up my HS, did anyone have as heck of a time as I did dimpling those holes with a c-frame dimpler. Had to reorder one skin when it ended up with more in it than Van's really wants-darn. i digress, Bill, read your tip on making little ribs on the elevator instead of bending, I'm coming up on that and wonder if you or any other listers had more pics of these ribs and installation, I think I might do that on the first try.

Nathaniel,
I took Bills suggestion and ran with it. I cut them (tabs) off with
a cuttoff wheel and made a little rib with .016 sheet meatl that
came in the emp. kit. Worked like a champ. I have the luxury of
being close to Jay Pratts RV Central so I went up and looked at the
planes there. It suprised me that 3 out of the 5 I looked at had the
tabs cut off. The best part is when you show off your handy work you
can say "I made that little part there". On the trim tabs I just
clamped them in my hand seam and bent them with that. If you take
your time they will come out fine.
John
PS: Thanks Bill!
