I just bought an RV-4 and was curious what is some good stuff to use
to clean the paint and the canopy that is safe and works well for
light dust and bugs. Any ideas or popular products out there? Thanks
Mike

Plexus for the canopy, Simple Green or Orange Fantastic for the bugs seems
to work great.

Plexus for the canopy. Be sure and DO NOT use paper
towels. It will craze the canopy. Get a lint free
polishing cloth from an auto part store. (Mine are
yellow and came in a pack of 3)
Spruce sells some citrus cleaner in a spray can that
works great on bugs and grease. No harsh chemicals in
it either.

A brief comment about Simple Green............Some years ago, upon
the recommendation of many others, I used Simple Green to wash the
interior bare aluminum surfaces of my airplane. No question it works
great at removing the accumulated grease and grime. Later, by
happenstance, I came across some information I believe came from the
FAA (though I am not certain) and said Simple Green was no longer
recommended for this purpose. I vaguely remember that the document
went into some detail explaining the negative anti-corrosion
properties left in its chemical residue. If anyone knows of this
document, or has additional information, please share it with this
group.

I remember the discussion but do not recall the source. I believe
there are cautions on the label of Simple Green to "test before
using" on aluminum. Seems kinda dumb because it may take years to
show any corrosive damage! Maybe a chemist or metallurgist can
enlighten us on the concerns with Simple Green on aluminum. In the
meantime, I have stayed away from Simple Green on our airplane and
have been using some stuff from Sporty's. I don't have the brand
name in front of me, but I do trust Sporty's to sell good stuff.
(Let's not talk about the price.)

There is a lot in the RV List archives on this. Seems the USAF
issued a report in 2002. You can get to it from the following link to
Avweb and scroll down to "simple".
