I'm hooking up my gretz heated pitot/static tube (RV-6A) and am somewhat
stumped on one point. The AN 786-1 fittings don't clear the mounting tube,
making it impossible to fit an AN818 nut on the fitting, at least the aft
fitting. Gretz says in his instructions that "some pitot tubes may require
you to make short extensions of aluminum tube to reach through the mounting
bracket to the connection of the pitot tube." Does this mean I'm supposed to
un-solder the AN786-1 fittings and solder on a length of alum tube? Also, if
this is the case, does the standard 1/4 alum tube fit over the tubes coming
from the pitot?
Is there some other way to connect to the AN786-1 fittings down inside the
mounting bracket?
I hope someone out there has done this and can offer some advice. I've
emailed Gretz and attempted to call him, but haven't made contact.
thanks,
Robert Dickson

Oh and I forgot to mention that I have to connect the extension to the pitot before you slide it into the adaptor.

Robert,
I made a short piece of tubing by flaring the ends and adding the
fittings. This fits inside the mount and joins to the heated pitot.

Hope this helps.

I had to bend the tubes coming out of the pitot a bit but it was able able to get it all in there, barely.

you're right. with a reasonable amount of persuasion it will all fit. I just
didn't want to force something and end up with an expensive piece of junk.

yeah, I ended up fashioning the extensions with a bend on the parts inside
the wing, but far enough above the mount that the pitot can be slid down and
the nuts loosened.
thanks for your reply.

I've got the an5814 pitot that has both pitot and static. The problem is
(was) that two an818 nuts just barely fit into the mount. I've got it all
fitted now.
I did notice on your web site that you ran the aluminum tube down the aft
side of the spar. Is that how Van says to do it now? My instructions
indicate to route it on the forward side, behind the tank, so that's what
I've done. I've also used clear tygon tubing from the extensions to the root
end. It's flexible and easy to turn corners with. I hope it's ok. I think
it'll be easy to transition to the the polyflo using this stuff. Of course,
"easy" on this project is highly relative.
thanks for your help.

To transition from the polyflo to anything else that is 1/4 O.D. you
can use Polyflo 1/4 inch unions. I had mine in my service van (work
for dental supply co.) but you may be able to get them from a good
plumbing supply. They use them sometimes for humidifier water lines.
You might look in the yellow pages for "dental supplies/equipment".
All the svc. techs have lots of them.

Robert,
The spar is different on the 7 vs 6 so the difference in where to
route the line. When I first started looking at different web sites
the -6 was the only thing that I could find and I thought, man
they've screwed up the install (:. Then I looked at the 6 plans (had
an old set from a friend) and realized they were right and so was I
we were just different. I used aluminum just because I had it in the
kit.

correction...you will need 3/8" polyflo fittings for 1/4" "i.d."
